ExHaust Systems!!! But POWER???

I had a 2.5" custom cat-back (mandrel, but not stainless) with a nice no-name muffler. Sounded deep, warm, and fuzzy! Very nice!

I'm running and OBX header and a HKS hiper. Works good. Car pulls very strong. For the most HP per dollar, I'd do the VTCS removal. That's been the most HP gain (butt dyno) since the header. It's cheap too.

And anytime you remove cats, the exhaust gets really loud. JUst remember that..the CS is really loud from what I've read around here. I really think the factory pipes are adequate for the HP levels most people are running.

Yeah, it seems the stock exhaust is just enough. You're probably right. Stock is probably where I'll stay for a little while.

I know RB shows their dyno for the catback at 4.7 hp, bu does anybody with it find the gain noticeable? I dont want to drop $450 for some minimal gain.

no exhaust system, save for corksport, will yield noticeable gains. This is because the CS is the only one that I know of that removes the 2nd cat.

I was running the AWR headers, CorkSport powerseries with an INjen Intake....now thats power....noticeable power...real noticeable....lost some power when I put the silencer in it but if I had the money i would have had an additional resonator installed.....that b**** was running through the rpm's quick...I would daydream about getting an lightweight flywheel.....but boy it was quick..nice throttle responce....go with the CS it cost less than some of the systems around and good power gains....(first)

An exhaust system won't give you any real power if you stay NA.

A stock exhaust will KILL your hp with a boosted car.

So, you need it if you plan on doing anything major.

Mine....
Megan Cat Back and MAM mid pipe.

I dynoed 107 hp, which is lame. I have the pipes on the car so I that when I put the turbo and built engine in, I get some flow. I wasn't expecting any hp increases, save maybe 3 or 4.

well s*** i should have more hp then u :) i got the injen cai obx header mam midpipe and mazdaspeed oval exhaust .... runnin no cats. loud and mean

Even with just good intake/exhaust combo you will notice a difference (Just not numbers wise -regarding power). The only 'performance mods I have are the K&N Typhoon intake and Racing Beat catback and the car definitely 'feels' a lot smoother all around when accellerating. Just don't expect raw power.

Hmmm, I dunno, I went the budget route. I purchased an ebay SRI w/the R-1 twin HKS style intake filters. To couple up w/that, I also purchased a Tsudo Catback 2.5" system, which I chopped the end off of and mated that to a 5Zigen rear section (all from eBay). The one thing I have left to purchase is a new exhaust manifold (either Wagner or an OBX header set). I must admit with just those 2 simple bolt-ons, the wagon lost some of it's sluggish trademarks and is starting to feel more like a sports car...if that makes any sense.

You'll notice a huge difference with the header... my intake seemed to give just add more noise :D Pretty soon I'll get a mid pipe fabbed up to mate with the Magnaflow cat-back system. I didn't notice a huge difference with it, but then again it might be harder to notice higher up power versus low end torque, so the solution would be to have it dynoed :)

Yeah, I definitely agree...I'll probably get one for myself after I get back from Jamaica for Xmas.
I added some more pics to my original post. :)

i have a full exhaust from wagner and unlike some other people on here have no problem with it. He even came in to finish it he went home sick that day. So speaking form personal experience i'd say get the wagner header and u'll be happy

I have a INJEN CAI, a ceramic coated header, a MAM highflow midpipe with CAT and a MAGNAFLOW CAT back exhaust. I am dyno'd at 116.4 WHP. Stock protege dyno's at 95 WHP.

Did you have the I/H/CB before the MAM piece? If so, how much louder did it make your exhaust? Thinking about eventually getting one, but don't want an obnoxious sounding exhaust (have Injen/Ractive/RacingBeat).

Thanks.

I had an ebay SRI with a K&N filter from when the car was a month old. Got 3 whp dyno'd from it.

I got the mazdaspeed axleback exhaust and it was OK. It had that drone at highway speeds. I kind of fixed that with dyna mat in the hatch and turning up the stereo.

Then I got a Ractive header and had it jet hot ceramic coated. (best $ spent)
The ractive header only has one bung for the first O2 sensor so I got a CEL very quickly.

The header allowed more air to reach the stock midpipe and resinator and tubing thus making the Mazdaspeed axleback louder.

Then I got the MAM midpipe with the O2 bung welded it and it solved my CEL problem. But now that Mazdaspeed exhaust was really screaming loud. I sounded like a Honduh.

So I got the magnaflow cat back and all my honduh bees in a coffee can sound is gone.

I have a nice growl with deep tones.

I went from a 95 whp stock P5 to a 117 whp with all my mods.

wow nice gain can you make a list of your mods please ?
headers reactive
catback magnaflow
intake ebay sri whit k&n
what esle do you have??

Addition of a Racing Mazda header/midpipe system to my Magnaflow CB added more than 4 dynoed whp and about the same torque figure to my '5. Running catless. The 4/2/1 header gives quicker throttle response, lowers the torque curve about 300 rpm, and increases accelleration from around 2800 to above redline with engine still pulling to fuel cutoff above 6700.

No way I'll go back to a stock or single-cat system. Zero-60 time has not been run nor has the 1/4, but a few recent thrashings of a few Hondas convinces me I have a decent runner. :D

damn so what do u think ur dyno will be if you put some better cams, cam gears, underdrive pulley
