Exhaust question...

any recommendations on what kinda of exhaust would sound good with an Injen CAI...???

I know many people hate it for whatever reason (bosal), but I constantly get compliments on my exhaust note. then again, it does remove the 2nd cat.

I have no problems with any of my welds, and if I did, I have stainless wire just sitting around collecting dust, waiting to be used.

well what kind of a sound are you going for? mellow, powerful, loud, soft, raspy, ricey ;) ? the most important part will be whether you want a loud or soft exhaust note. that'll help limit your choices.

How would you get a nice powerfull sounding, not ricey, nice rumble. But of course a little highs here and there...cause common..it's a ricer .

I'm curious about the different exhausts out there too. I want something to free up the restriction, but I'm still wanting to keep my stock tip or muffler (I want a stock look to coincide with the sleeper theme I'm trying to go for).Thinking the best thing for that is a high-flow cat and thinner 2.5" piping all the way back to the muffler.

But then again, I've never really dealt with an exhaust before so I don't even know if that's possible.

i dont know, i want something thats medium volume with a "rumble", maybe a few pops here and there. i heard a borla on a V6 grand prix, it was surprisingly good, twas no V8, but it wasnt bad, wouldnt mind that sound, also one time i heard a WRX with a deep growl to it, exhaust tip was huge, i wondered if it was running unmuffled.

wilsman - if you want that kind of a sound, maybe a blitz nurspec exhaust. i've heard one on a wrx and granted it will sound nothing like it on our car but it sounds quite nice. i've heard people say it has a slight rasp. it's also quite loud. and come to think of it, a borla might do the trick. you could try researching that too. i wish there was a site like www.blowoffvalves.com that had exhaust recordings. at least it could give people an idea of what different exhausts sound like.

frozen - if you wanna keep the stock look, you'll have to get a muffler that you can weld a tip on to. maybe a magnaflow 2.5" inlet/outlet and weld a similar tip on to it. or just keep the stock piping and get an exhaust cutout. or an electric cutout even. www.quicktimeperformance.com/qtec.htm

striker - would the borla exhaust be a full exhaust? Or would I just buy the muffler from them? Also you are full of good knowledge so I gotta ask is our "down pipe" just a pipe that cuts out the cats?

hahahaha, thanks for the compliment :D i just read a lot :) well whadaya know....it looks like borla makes a catback for the 2001 2.0L protege. that should fit our car. maybe some slight adjustments to it but nothing a competent muffler shop couldn't handle.

our "downpipe"? i'm gonna assume you mean our stock dp. it's not a pipe that cuts out the cats, it's the pipe that comes off the s-bend off the turbo. it then goes right to the cats. so the basic flow of the exhausts gases is : exhaust manifold, turbo, s-pipe, dp, cats, muffler. now some downpipes replace the cats with just a straight pipe. so maybe that's what you mean.

oh yeah, i just had a thought. fujitsubo exhausts.....they sound mean as s***. i dunno if they sell just their mufflers....probably not. but it might be worth a shot looking around. i'm also unfamiliar with injen's SES and espelir's exhaust notes. so there may be some other possibilites. veilside sells just their mufflers i believe....that'd be pretty tite. they're supposed to be really loud. i wonder if top secret sells their mufflers separate as well....hmmm.......

Thanks the helo is greatly appreciated as usual. I just kept hearing "downpipe downpipe" and remembered a thread that took out the cats, so I wasn't sure if that was it. Sounds cool that the downpipe costs little but adds breat performance per dollar.

yeah, i just wish spool or ion would sell their 2.5" dp by itself. i forget whose it was that bolts up straight to the turbo and not to the s-pipe but i want that one :D maybe it was both......it's late. i'm forgetting.

that dp bolts up to the s-pipe. it's ion's that bolts up directly to the turbo. here's the link i was looking for. scroll down a bit and you'll see the pic.

even though the pic is of magnus's dp-back exhaust, all the dp's released bolt up to that s-pipe. ion's goes straight to the turbo. i'm not sure about spool's but judging from the pic on their website, i'm guessing theirs bolts up to the s-pipe as well.

Cool, thanks again.

Didn't mean to thread jack. Back to the topic of making an awsome sound for an Injen CAI.

when my muffler finally gets here (again!!!), i'll have it installed right away and i'll be sure to post pics and vids as soon as possible. since i have an injen, might be a place to start :)
