Do you love your child less because they're "slow". I loved the 5s from the first time I saw one. To me it has the perfect combination, Style, value, reliability, a blast to drive and yes, I believe a bit of power. It's not a race car, but as has been said a million times, if you wanted a race car you should have bought one. You can have all the civics or corollas you want. I'll never put down the 5.
It's just a car. And yes, the civic is a much better platform for just about um...everything. The PR5 is neat because it is a unique car with a nice build quality. If honda could have kept the civic closer to the 96-00 I probably would have bought a 02 civic instead of an 02 PR5.

I'd much rather cruise through downtown in my Pr5 with the sunroof down than in my obnoxious, no power steering, no power anything, 10 year old interior civic. But can you get $1200 turbo kits for a PR5? Can you find $100 bottom end when you blow your PR5 motor in a weekend? Probably not. To say civics are too popular is retarded, the parts availability is insane. Have fun only having 2 choices for something as basic as a damn intake!

BFD. Why do you have to care what people say? Everyone has their own opinion. If it makes sense, then think about it. If it doesn't make sense at all to you, just ignore it.

You paid for the car, you drive your own car and YOU enjoy it. Plain simple.

maybe I was used to my Honda Accord wagon because that thing reved like mad.

civics (blarf)
every 16 year old drives them...no thank you, i'll stick with mazda
Enjoy burying your head in the sand. The cost of originality will make your car very slow...

.............

I just hate Mazda sells the worst Familias to us. Actually, most of people r just attracted by it's lookin' more than everythin' that they have to consider about. The P5s r so much worse than the Japanese version such as lower hp, cheap interior, etc. However, Toyota and honda sell better corollas and civics than the Japanese version such as more hp!! I love my P5, but I just hate the ******' Mazda sell the worst familia to us with that s*** price. Everybody thinks the price of P5 is cheap(around U.S.$13000 for a brand new car), but if they sell it in Japan, the price must be lower than U.S.10000 or no one wants to buy it!! I just hate the motherfuckin' Mazda company:flip:Not MY P5(redp5)

you mean ford ecu's suck balls? lol...
no, mazda ecu suck balls....true the protege is a ford EEC4 ecu, but it's tuned by mazda.....for reference my stock ecu on my turbo pinto will handle up to 350whp on the factory EFI system. Seems like maybe ford is a tad better at tuning there 18year old ECU's (I'm running a 1986 Thunderchicken Turbocoupe motor and ecu, fuel system, exhaust etc...)

Because civics were making 127 hp with 1.6 liters and 1 cam! The B16's, a 1.6 was making 160hp. And the D and B series motors rev alot faster.
Who cares what engine size and technolgoy they make the power with? It's the result that counts. Ok, so maybe a 1.6 weighs less than a 2.0.

I respect someone who puts thousands in their econobox to make it fast. But is it really worth it? For draging, the money spent to make a V8 fast is much less than any Honda can manage.

Yes, Honda motors do rev faster, but they need to to extract the amazing 111lb/ft torque from their B16.

How fast you're going is not important. I can be on Shinkasen train at near 200mph speeds, will I be having fun?? Nope.

The important thing is having fun, and fast is not always fun.

Stop bitchin at each other. Everyone here loves the P5 or they wouldn't be here. They're not very quick. Deal. Like leungwingkei said, if you want pure fast, go with an 82 transam. If you want fun, go P5. I mean our car, like every car, has its advantages and dissadvantages, but that doesnt mean we cant be friends and agree that it's a kickass little car.

OK.... passion for the car's handling and body style aside. For a 4-cylinder, this engine neither revs smoothly or freely. Acceleration is terribly slow. Noise proofing could stand some beefing up.

I get really confused when people talk about the great torque that the car has or how great the above is.

However, I will say that the handling and body style are good. It's a stylish, well handling, fun cheapish car.

I had fun on the bullet-train. It was FAST!

Just remember that sometimes what may appear as bitching is nothing more than either:
A.vented fustration at trying to reach a goal
B.Desire to spark conversation on how to reach a said goal.
C.Just people joking around.
D.The sometimes annoyance that occupies all forums:Troll

Doesn't matter, sadly.
Trq at the wheels for a B16, about 100
Trq at the wheels for a FS-DE, about 105

Mid 15...
High 16...

Personally I love the Honda/Mazda debate. Or the civic VS protege debate. I have had 2 civics and this is my 1st Protege. Civic = top end, Protege = Bottom end. That is what happens when you put a truck engine in a protege chassis.

Personally I would take a stock P5 over a Civic SI any day....When it comes down to value. When it comes to modding existing engine, hard to say. All I know is I promised myself I would never go lower than a 2.0L again cause the torque-less wonder (civic) just didn't do it for me. I just miss Vtec. Maybe if I get a Mazda 3 with DOHC 2.3L Variable Valve timing I will be happy.
