Personally I love the Honda/Mazda debate. Or the civic VS protege debate. I have had 2 civics and this is my 1st Protege. Civic = top end, Protege = Bottom end. That is what happens when you put a truck engine in a protege chassis.

Personally I would take a stock P5 over a Civic SI any day....When it comes down to value. When it comes to modding existing engine, hard to say. All I know is I promised myself I would never go lower than a 2.0L again cause the torque-less wonder (civic) just didn't do it for me. I just miss Vtec. Maybe if I get a Mazda 3 with DOHC 2.3L Variable Valve timing I will be happy.
The 99-00 SI's are so much fun to drive, but damn, there is NO trq. I looked for an SI before my P5, but couldn't find one that wasn't abused...revving to 8k is so fun...:(

i test drove the '99, '00 civics and i wasnt impressed at all....very boring car. i drove the '00 protege and later a p5 and i was sold(wiggle)

with the introduction of mazda 3, theres real no competition out there

Depends if it was an EX/DX or an SI. Totally different car.

I LOVE my 5.. and it is stock except for my intake, exhaust, and some appearance mods.. seems like the owners of 5's love their cars more than the Speed owners.. :)

Dunno about love, we each love them as much as the others...its just we aren't delusional of what the cars were meant for.....(braindead

no, mazda ecu suck balls....true the protege is a ford EEC4 ecu, but it's tuned by mazda.....for reference my stock ecu on my turbo pinto will handle up to 350whp on the factory EFI system. Seems like maybe ford is a tad better at tuning there 18year old ECU's (I'm running a 1986 Thunderchicken Turbocoupe motor and ecu, fuel system, exhaust etc...)
Damn skippy, and there are all kinds of cheap piggybacks for it also. But it is a mustang computer...wonder if a Ford EEC-4 could be EEC-tunered to work on the pro...hhmmm...

Anyway, my 5 does what I need it to. It has a good bit of torque for a small 4 banger. Is my Civic DX 1.5L faster, maybe (it gets much better MPG also) but it doesn't look as good or handle as good as the 5. I also like that the P5 is somewhat rare, at least in my area.

we love 'em for the sports wagons that they are.. :)

I drive an M5

Well not all of us grow up driving M5's, but guess what i did. Drove daddy's BMW for a year and a half. Not only that i crashed it twice. Man that thing was a beast. How many ppl can say they drove an M5 none the less crashed it. But look at what i am driving now! Protege 5. LOL. It is slow as hell (compared to the M5) but i love it. Its MY baby.

I thank all of you who have restored my faith in this forum.... It seems I am not alone in the way I feel about my ride.

Yes everyone does have the right to give their opinions, but when the horse is dead, why keep beating it??

Just to let everyone know I just got home from the Cleveland Auto Show at the IX Center and after checking out all of the other cars I was considering to buy, I'm still glad I chose my P5.

Yes, I'd probably trade it in for a Ford GT (Oh crap is that sweet!!!). But that cars wheels and tires cost more than my P5 probably... Oh well....

Has anyone seen the new Mazda 6 Sportwagon??? That is next on my list!!

if i could do it over again, i would not have got it, but since its here and dented up-stuck w/ it and am making the most of it.
cant wait till its paid off and i can trade it in!

dented? I totally can relate to that one! I had a tree branch fall on mine and big dent on the drivers side A-pillar.. but dents can be fixed. :) How did you get your dent? and what would you trade it in for?

MAZDA = SLOW I dont care my parents bought me this car, yes it's slow but who cares I don't see any other hatches that look any frekkin' better than the Protege 5. I think too much power (hp) is dangerous for me. Matrix, Civic, VIBE, that new chevrolet, escort wagon, mazda 3 ekekekekekek OK it looks alright from the uhh the mazda logo!!! OMG ugly!! I'll OWN every hatch at a competition. :) *edit my bro will be getting a subaru soon so i'll have 2 beautiful cars in my garage.. parents garage

LOL Sweet

Booya booya, I am yancy to buy something new I guess!

Bah! P5 till I become rich I guess.

I'll decide on whether I still like my P5 after I drop it and dress it up a bit.

I didn't buy the P5 for speed. I bought my P5 because it's one of the best looking cars out there, and because of it's rarity people always have to take a second look. With extra mods, the P5 is all the more fun to drive on those twisting roads. (cabpatch)

Hey, I like my P5 and i know it is not a fast car. I drove a sedan before I purchased my P5. People are always going to say it is a slooooooowwwww car.

They should have bought a V8 Stang, a Camero, or some older european car if they were looking for speed....

It can hold its own though compared with other 2.0L's in its class.....

What other cars were on your test drive list? What now do you wish you would have gotten instead?

I was looking at the Corolla S, and a plain old Civic. I knew the Protege had a lot more going for it and picked it. I love it and it's plenty fast enough to go to jail. If I had the money at the time a G35, Legacy GT, or Speed6 in the driveway would be nice, but I couldn't make any more daily use out of them than my LX (except during autox). I've matured way past childish street kills and license-losing speeding for its own sake, so I have no complaints. For the $13,800 I paid new, there isn't a better car out there for anywhere near the price.

Yes, I own a BMW and the Protege5.

I like the Protege5 because it can hold more with the seats folded, has quicker steering, is a 5-spd manual, eats regular gas, looks sporty, handles crisply, is FWD for snow, and is paid up.

I like the BMW because it is faster, more refined, more solid, has better materials, has a more compliant suspension, and offers prestige.

Each car is different, but meets my needs at the moment.

Good explanation ZoomFive. That is pretty much exactly what the P5 was designed for. Then people like me come along and want more out of the car, blowing 5 grand on it and still not coming out satisfied. I agree with everything you said, but damn, sure would be nice to have an E36 M/// :)
