Engine Misfire

:
2007 Mazda CX-9 Touring
I was on the highway and between 55 and 60 mph i get a blinking check engine light. I get off at the exit and as soon as i slow down the light turns off. There was an autozone nearby and i got a code for misfire cylinder 6. I turned on the car and no more engine light. I can drive on the streets up to 50 mph but once i get on the highway and try to reach 60 or more it will blink again. I also notice that the shifts are quicker i get to 5th gear very quickly any ideas. Also is this covered under the powertrain warranty? i have one year left on that. It is a2007 awd touring i only have 35k miles on it. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

You have to find out what is wrong before you can determine whether it is covered or not.
Take it to the dealer. Likely the spark plug of #6 needs to be replaced first and try it out.

Thanks for the quick response ceric. I think i am one of the unlucky ones. The misfire is gone. I was trying to duplicate it. I am still going to let the dealer know about this. Can bad fuel cause a misfire? I have never had this problem on my windstar and it is going on 15 years old. Question if it is the coil that goes on top of the plug or a bad fuel injector is this covered under the powertrains warranty or am i on my own.

Bad fuel is possible.
I had a BMW 540 once. It stalled twice at red lights in the first year.
Never happened again during the rest of 8 years.
I could only think of "bad fuel" as an explanation.

Every manufacture defines powertrain differently.
You have to check with Mazda's own list.
Most are common sense, but others are on the borderline.

Just wanted to let you know as well as others on this forum. They said it was the coil on cylinder 6. The warranty company covered the coil but not the spark plug. So i paid the 100 deductible plus the 5.36 for the plug. I also had regular service done as well. Do you think that the plug should have been covered also would the coil fall under the powertrain warranty? since the powertrain was malfunctioning and it was a powertrain code.

I haven't seen a list of items that are covered under powertrain warranty.
I can't comment on that.
You might call Mazda corporate hotline and ask them to send you a complete list.
I am sure they have doc like that.

Good to know that the problem has been found and fixed.

I wonder how the coils are designed for these cars. My VW 2.8 VR6 (B4 Passat) engine had a single coil "pack" which is one plastic block which all 6 plug wires connected to (not to be confused with a distributor) and the plastic was manufactured too thinly on the surface of the large coil pack and over time from heat/cold/heat/cold would develop microscopic cracks, so it was determined by a few people that when the conditions were just right (high humidity, kinda cold, misting outside) that you would have random cylinder misfires, engine would run rough, etc. Simple fix was to remove the coil pack, and apply a layer of J.B. weld to the entire outer surface of the coil pack and lay the pack flat on a flat surface until the J.B. weld was dry. I did this fix myself, and it held strong for 70k+miles until I sold the car. Happened to me, and I performed the fix, spent 5 bucks on the J.B. Weld, it even looked real nice. Saved myself 300 + labor ish. I would be highly willing to bet that the cause of kornholio's problem was a "cracked" coil housing (not visible to the naked eye). I just wonder how they are designed, how easy it would be to apply the same procedure to the individual coils of the 3.7, as a preventative measure.

Plugs are considered a normal wear item and are rarely covered by the power train warranty

Just bought my used cx9 a week ago. Love it. But it misfires. Whenever I accelerate the check engine light comes on and you can feel the misfire as the car studders. Not cool. I installed a K&N Air filter. The guy at the dealership claimed that it was causing the misfire. I laughed at him and said your nuts. If you believe that to be true then I don't want you working on my car. He turned red and walked away. So set up an appointment for monday. I will suggest the coil and spark plugs. I guess I'll go buy the plugs right away NGK IFR is what I'm going with. Does anyone else have any suggestions of why it could misfire?

meaning what exactly? wet connectors? Bought it from a car dealer. Not a buy here pay here type either.

Carmax pressure washes engine bays, or at least used to (don't know if they still do). I saw it in the flesh. Basically water can really wreak havoc on connectors, relays, modules, ignition coils, etc. Not saying that is for certain your issue, just a possibility.

Automakers still cover wear and tear items for certain period of time.
For example, your brake pads are covered by 1yr/12K miles. They are wear and tear.
Now, automaker claims that the plugs are now platinum-tipped, and they last 100K miles. I don't know what sort of warranty
they are covered under. That was my point.

Well i'm sure they did clean the engine since it looks clean. Would that dry out over time and fix the problem or is the damage done? I could take my air hose and unplug everything then blow it out to get rid of any water. Then again i live in florida, wouldn't it evaporate?

I had a water pump explode in my Passat. That was the only time I have ever taken a hose into the engine bay, and it ran really rough, misfiring and such for about 5 miles. If yours is not going away, get it checked out.

Yes I will bring it to the dealership on monday. It runs fine until it misfires. That misfire turns the a/c off for a few seconds too. Strange. It misfires from time to time when I accelerate. Any speed. Weather I floor it or just tap the gas pedal. Its all very strange. But Thank you for your input. I will compile all the info received to give the Mechanics a few ideas. Thanx for the help. Talking about taking the hose to the engine.... my uncle cleans all his cars/trucks engines with simple green and the water hose for as long as I know him. Never a problem.

If it misfires under load then have the code checked. Even when the check engine light turned off i was still able to get a code. Go to an autozone or any other parts store which checks it for free. With mine it was a coil on cylinder 6. They billed the warranty company 100 for the coil. The ones with the six cylinders in one box are a lot cheaper. My 96 thunderbird and windstar have them and still to this date no misfires and they are 15 yrs old.
