I have seen people talking about piggy-backs for the MSP throughout the forum, but all of them seem to be ghost products. I have seen Perfworks mentioned the most, but I can't even find a website for the company. Also, is there anyone here that actually has an installed & functioning managment system?

I really want to get something that will let me retard the timing under boost so I can boost more, but keep the advanced timing for low-end power. Also, I want to have something to protect against detonation, maybe a knock sensor. It goes without saying that I also want to play with the fuel map, too.

Please give me a list of some companies and products that can do this. Also, please tell me about your experiences with any of them (on the MSP).

Thanks!

I do not have a mazdaspeed, but while I was at the shop working on my car there was a guy that came in with a black MSP..I'm not sure if he is on this forum or not..anyway, he was equipped with a piggyback, two extra injectors, and a larger mass air..I talked with Nick(owner) upon his return from road tuning the car, and he could not believe the difference in power...This piggyback will manage both fuel AND timing..It is not very hard to install...I wired it myself on my car..Also, the proper tuning of this module will be the ultimate defense against detonation..

I am using the same piggyback on my car, and let me tell you it is great..I have not touched the fuel maps, simply because my lack of knowledge on the subject may lead me to screw something up..I have witness the software first hand and it is very very easy to use, you just have to know what numbers to put where..Feel free to give Nick a call at the shop and he will gladly tell you anything you would like to kno..

So wait, what's the name of the piggyback? Is that the name of the shop you listed? What about the company? Where can you buy it? Thanks

...you buy it from the company that I listed...I dont think the piggyback has a name, so lets just call him Porky the Piggyback

Wouldn't that be Turboge (or however it is spelled). And isn't that the Haltech E6k????

Thanks for the info! I will definitely look into the Modern Performance piggy. That name sounds familiar. I see that they are in Jersey, but isn't there something in Michigan with a similar name? It would be nice to talk to them in person.

I would look to Spool and Hiboost to come out with a solid product. One thing to really realize is that this type of product requires A TON of research and design. Patience...it will come. Remember...if there is a need...someone will fill it.

The MPI piggyback has a name. . .and it isn't porky. But talk to Nick he can help.

If you aren't interested in fuel control.

this allows you to control timing and has a kncok sensor to retard timing per cylinder as you knock. Nice unit. . .I've got one and it has certainly come in handy.

Beavis,

That is a really cool little unit! I really like the fact that they have boost retard, which will help those of us who got the flash done.

Thanks for the info so far. I understand the tuning theories, but I'm not up-to-date on the applications. I know what I need to do, it's just find the right equipment at the right price.

I just emailed the guys over at J&S about an application for MSP's. Hopefully they have something that will work. To be honest, I'd be happier with something to protect against detonation over something to adjust A/F ratios.

I talked to a Mazda tech at O'reilly's the other day, and he told me to bring him the car and he could adjust timing and fuel curves through the stock computer. I may pull my MBC off and try this.

I am running a Haltech E6K, however I am not running extra injectors or FMU's or anything along those lines. I am running it in semi-piggyback mode right now which allows me to run a number of different ways.

For my setup right now I am utilizing the factory timing maps while tuning my own fuel maps. Once I finish my fuel maps I can flip my timing switch and use my own. I have a very well tuned timing map right now but won't be utilizing it until I am done.

This hasn't been an easy car to tune, under 5000rpm it's a piece of cake but above that range fueling starts to become an issue. I've spent more time tuning the upper RPM's than all of the mid-range and below. Also in addition to the FMIC, cooling issues have risen and have to be dealt with as well.

There is no problem with the "flashed" timing maps, they work great when you have the proper fuel there. Detonation is not an issue with correct fueling.

Our stock injectors properly tuned are capable of around 8psi with the factory MSP turbo.

The haltech setup runs roughly $1250-1350 and runs in conjunction with all of your factory equipment.

and the installation ? is it easy or, need a professionnal to install it ?

4 wires for injection, 2 wires for ignition. Power, Ground, Acc wire.
1 for TPS, 1 for Air Temp, 3 for MAP, 2 for Coolant Temp, 1 for o2 sensor.

Optional wires, 1 for cooling fan, 1 for VICS, 1 for BAC, 1 for a/c fan.... etc..

So 17-20 wires in total and you're done. Takes about 3-4 hours of soldering and cleaning up. I have made all of the wiring and install diagrams and have almost finished tuning a complete map for this car.

My MSP member install fee is $400, which includes wiring, mounting and programming. It also includes 1 hour of wideband tuning after the install to verify that everything is in check, as each car will differ due to modifications.

It's preferred that the car be dropped off for the weekend to allow ample time for testing and cleanup.

3 Wires for MAP? Does this thing take any readings from our MAF? Do you just use those 3 for the 3 on the MAF? Also, what kind of wideband do you have, where did you get it, how much was it, and , oh yeah, is it easy to use? Thanks!

Please refer to my other posts in the F/I forums. The haltech uses a MAP sensor, which has 3 wires running to it. The MAF is no longer used, it just sits there to keep the stock ECU happy.
