Engine Management..What to do?

NOT INTENDING TO THREADJACK HERE,

But does anyone know if the AEM unit has been tried and if so, is it ready for puchase/use....

I'm searching for a total replacement of the ECU. I have MEGA plans in store for this car, starting early next year....

Its even PnP !

I would really have to suggest the MPI. It is a great unit, no matter what modifications you do, you can get the most hp out of them. If you have any problems, chances are someone has already had them and everybody is willing to share info.

I just read your sig here on line about your quarter mile times. I am new to the Mazdaspeed Protege and this forum. I am curious as to how you achieved those numbers with all that stock equipment. Thanks for your help!

^^hey brotha shoot him a pm.
back on topic please

so dsm's afc or the ftc?

Ok.. lay out your goals. AFC for cheap tuning, FTC for more intense tuning (building motor, upgrading turbo).

It might be a while for the FTC to come out and get some good MAPS for. The AFC is out and there are some maps around here. A map is a spreadsheet file you upload into the software, this gives the piggyback system the A/F values for any given rpm and boost level. I don't know how the software will be different for the FTC... but that is how the AFC works.

i'm thinking the afc will suit my needs but i wanna know what else the ftc can do and how much of a price diff there will be. if the ftc isn't that much more $$$ then i'll swing that way for it.

my mods are in my sig, and i'm still waiting on a downpipe, going w/ cams. i have a extra throttle body tha'ts getting ported. still looking to have a intake manifold ported & polished.
then i'll be looking for a greddy profec. that's all my plans for now. i want a reliable 13 sec car.
not sure if i'm going internals or not.
and i want to get a mam turbo manifold soon too.
these are my plans for the end of the year.

Thats kinda like an oxymoron.

You need to talk to John @ airflow logistics. PM DSMConvert or email john@airflowlogistics.com or call him. He can tell you the differences in both options and price, and guide you as to what you will need.

Paul....you must listen to me. :D

For as much as your're talking about what you want to do, get a standalone. You'll shoot yourself in the foot as well as waste money by getting a piggyback just to find out that you want/need a standalone down the road. I don't know what is all available to you guys. I know an AEM can be a major PITA, especially for rotaries. We only have one guy that really knows how to tune it...and he's not a tuner. The tuners ask HIM. Also, the power you gain from a stock setup my simply swapping the ECU can be more than 5-10whp. It all depends on how conservative the factory tune was.

Don't go the cheapest route. Trust me.

I think the MPI or DSM's new FTC would make a reliable high 13's car. The FTC has not been used by anyone yet.... but I do know there are some fast MPI's out there. I believe MAM tunes on the AEM and they offer a PnP harness.

We would all have standalone if it was an ideal option both financially and for tuneability.

You don't "need" any engine management to run 13.9's if you have right combination. I was running 13.4's before I put the MPI on last year.

tuning issues with mpi

hey guys just got a quick question i've got a built engine (CP Pistons 8.5:1 and Oliver Billet Rods), gt28r turbo, greddy profecB spec2, injen CAI, custom front mount, turbo back, and tuned with MPI. I was getting it dyno tuned the other day, and start out making 210whp at only 7 psi (motor can take up to 20). But there was some sort of surging or something, the dyno charts looked like earthquake charts with breaks that extended up and down the entire chart.. what could cause that? Also it keeps hitting some sort of cut that feels like its fuel thats prohibiting the car from passing 12.5psi and causes extreme jerking... need help!

i don't see an upgraded fuel pump and injectors. are you maxing out your injectors at high rpms? you may need larger injectors and a bigger fuel pump.

You can try a FCD, that may help with the fuel cut/spark cut you are getting above 12.5 psi.

btw - what where you numbers at 12.5?

alrighty then....how about vac line leaks or coupler leaks?

haha sorry again, i've got JoeP's FCD too - 200 at 4k rpm, we couldn't get to redline cuz of the cut

don't believe so, the car runs fine on 10psi at all areas even WOT, but once we got to 12.5 it started the violent jerking and whatever, i was thinkin maybe JoeP's FCD needed to be adjust a little to add more voltage but dono for sure, but i've just got a hold of Nick at Modern Performance and i'm going to send him datalogs of the dyno tuning so maybe he'll have some good insight as to what it is

Cool...keep us posted.
