I have a 2008 Mazda 3 with 2 liter engine it has 26k miles. My previous oil changes were done at the dealer. I received free oil changes with the new car purchase. (I'm sure they
weren't free but it wasn't shown on my new car purchase invoice).
Two days ago I changed the oil and filter. Used a Mazda filter. I filled the new filter with
oil before installing & filled the engine with oil. When I started the engine it knocked
(sounded like rods) for about 1 second or less. After that it starts normal.
I'm just wondering if this is common for this car. I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma with a similar
oil filter location and have changed the oil and filter in it since new and have never heard
a start-up knock.
I noticed that lots of oil runs out of the oil filter adapter when the filter is removed but
my Tacoma does the same. The oil is draining out of the oil galleries so when you install
the filter air is trapped above the filter. It's never been a problem with other vehicles
I have owned.
I used the recommended 5w-20 oil. The dealer claims they use 5w-20 Valvoline SuperBlend.
