Engine clicking

if trading in isn't a possibility (just bought the P5 a year ago) and someone would like to reduce the risk of oil starvation (such as myself), what could someone do? I know that a baffled oil pan is one possibility but are there any others?

also, would a spun rod bearing make the ticking noise without load on the engine? In other words, would you hear the ticking just revving the engine in neutral if it was a rod bearing? I ask because I get a slight tick but it's only under very heavy throttle in 2nd and 3rd but not at all when just revving it.

Im drawing a blank, I know awr made baffled oil pans for the p5, a few guys modded their oil pickup hose, and another guy got an oil accumulator (sp?) or something like that. Not sure how any of those worked out in the long run though.

-focus on near top right of page where there is a countdown,
-wait 30sec and click d/l

Yelo yours sounds different. Mine was an actually clicking\ticking metallic sound. That sounds terrible though. To me it sounds like something on your exhaust is rubbing or a heatshield as others have said. Thats got a nasty sound man jeezus.

Lazy peeps see if this works for you

The sound in the video link is definitely a heat shield. Just figure out which heat shield it is and then slightly pull it away from the piping.

So it's not that severe?
will it cost me an arm & leg to get it fixed @ stealership?

If I were you, I would rev the engine at the throttle body (pull on the throttle pulley) and listen to see if the rattle was coming from the exhaust manifold (header) or from underneath the car. I am pretty sure those are the only heat shields. If it is coming from the exhaust manifold, rev it to the point it starts rattling and hold it there while putting pressure on the heat shield (with something other than your hand, that thing gets pretty damn hot) and see if it goes away. If it is coming from underneath the car, get a buddy to rev the car to the rattling point while you put pressure on the heat shield underneath the car with like a broomstick or something. If neither locations make the rattling go away, try listening to different parts of the car while someone revs it like in the video.

Also, if you have a short-shifter installed and the heat shield between the exhaust and the shift lever was modified to accommodate the lowering the shift lever, the exhaust might vibrate against the heat shield when it shifts around at different RPM's.

I checked the heat shield for the header, wasn't that,
sounds like the rattle is coming from the
heat shield from the cat/down pipe area......
i don't have short shifter install on my car.....

Dame, that wasnt the sound I was getting, that sounds like the heat sheild, maybe a broken bolt rubbing or something.

Definatly doesnt sound like it comming from inside the motor.

& thanks for uploading it to Putfile.

It could be the resevoir thats relocated with a CAI install. That thing gets loose easy and vibrates and rattles like a b****.

I sugest all to check that too when looking for the noise sourse.

Mine also sounds nothing like Yelo's. It's not near that loud, and it's more of a pronounced tick, like you can hear each revolution of the engine.

but i j/ don't get it,
how come the rattle will only comes out @ certain RPM?

The engine vibrates at different rates at different rpms. it just has to be in a certain range for it to be audible

How does the positrack rear suspension in a pontiac work?

.... it just does.

Curtesy of joe dirt.

Its like a sub rattling different parts of your car at different basslines, everything has its own resonant frequency.

^^^ what did that set you back? Same sound as what is bein described here?

Rac3rx your rims arent played out. lol (yes wrong thread I know).

IIRC there are two bolts that hold the stock exhaust manifold to the block, you may want to check those brackets and make sure they are tight, as well as the small heat shield that is on the bottom of the J pipe (lack of better explaination, but its where the header comes to one piece and makes a J manuever) and see if that is the culprit.

found out it was the heatshield behind the first cat that was rattlin'.....
got it all removed....and no more annoyin' noise
