I don't think this is related to the recall, and Mazda's website does not say my car is affected by the recall, but when I rev the engine to about 3k RPM and hold it there, it has a slight clicking noise. I can only hear it when I have my windows down and I'm next to a wall (something for the sound to bounce off of) Has anyone else encountered this, and is there anything I can do about it? Or is it just normal operation? Any help is appreciated

it must be a bomb if it's ticking! JK, injectors.???????..these things are very hard to diagnose
It's not a real loud noise, and I haven't noticed any difference in performance yet...If I take it to a dealer, do you guys know about how much it is going to cost me if they don't find anything? If they do find something,the car is still under warranty for a couple more months. I could remove the oil pan, but I am currently living in an apartment, and I don't have any tools. The next time I will be at my parent's house (with a fully equipped garage) is in a couple of weeks. This noise has been happening for quite a while, I would say about a year since I first noticed it. If it is a bearing, I would think something would have seriously broken right now.
it could just be an exhaust leak. If its a rod bearing it'll sound like metal on metal (take a screw driver and tap it rapidly on the valve cover...thats what it sounds like)
My best bet would be exhaust leak or heat shield rattle.
Open the hood and rev the motor with the throttle cable bracket on the throttle body and see if you can better isolate where the noise is coming from in relation to the motor.

My noise happens at the same RPM range 2500-3000 much louder in 1st gear. I had the noise at 45000 miles, and I'm at almost 50000. I took it in to the dealer and basically voided my warranty due to my "CAI." Dumbshits! but whatever I was close to 50000 miles anyways so I believe I put this car to good use between that time :-D
Basically told me I needed a new shortblock. Though I heard one of the mechanics tell me it'll probably not get worst then this but eventually it'll probably break. "Meaning you've gone nearly 5000 miles with it and it hasn't broke yet you probably have a year left before it goes." And really I can't wait for it go poopoo so I can get a MAM shortblock (if it works on an ATX), and turbo the sucker.
And for some reason last few weeks after my final check in with the Dealer (tranmission flush, and "tune up") the sound actually lowered. I basically have to make the car make the sound to do it, meaning staying on 1st gear and slowly raising the throttle. But normal driving I hardly hear it now.

#1 reason I traded the p5 in. Dealership said they couldnt hear it, then when they did it was because it was starved of oil. Traded it in a few weeks later at a different dealership. There are probably a dozen threads on it. =(

also, would a spun rod bearing make the ticking noise without load on the engine? In other words, would you hear the ticking just revving the engine in neutral if it was a rod bearing? I ask because I get a slight tick but it's only under very heavy throttle in 2nd and 3rd but not at all when just revving it.

Mine Seems to be similar to Moonman's, although I haven't heard it in a few days now. The noise is confined to the 2.7-3k range, once you go above that, it goes away. I'm thinking if it was a rod bearing, the noise would happen at almost any RPM. Has anyone else had this experience?

mine makes the tapping noise at idle..then i hit the accelerator and it goes away. i think people said it was something to do with somekind of vaccum line, but i have no noise at higher RPMS

I think those that are trying to clarify what is happening need to state if they can hear the noise when just revving the engine or only under acceleration or both.
I'm not an expert on engines just yet but I understand how they work and I would think that a spun rod bearing would be audible and very noticeable without putting load on the engine (you could hear it just by revving the engine in neutral without moving). I very well could be wrong and that is why I posted....so someone could answer these questions.
I read that if one experiences a sound resembling marbles being shaken rapidly in a metal can under heavy acceleration, it is detonation or pinging. The most common cause of this is using fuel with too low an octane. I recently installed a set of long-reach spark plugs which advance the timing a little by lower the spark location further into the combustion chamber and I'm going to try increasing the octane on my next tank (which will be soon, the light just came on).
