Empty light mileage!?

Generally I have had about 2-3 gallons left and on average I get 27ish miles to the gallon. So I atleast have 27 safe miles to find a gas station which isn't hard in this area.

i pushed 80 miles on mine ... but i dont think that light is very acurate ...or our fuel guage for that matter

we have a lot of stop-go traffic here. u can get about 20-40 mi. on that depending on how u drive and how much traffic there is. bottom part of the tank is the biggest.

Running the gas so low the light comes on is not really recommended. All the sediment, dirt, and other crap that settled into the bottom of the tank will then get sucked into the fuel system. The fuel filter will get most of it, but the crap can foul up an injector. It is recommended at about 1/4 tank of gas left, to refuel.

Of course, I have run my car to where the light came one a few times, just because I was not looking at how much gas I had. I went about 40-60 miles until I got gas, at the most, and I still had some fuel left in the tank when I got it.

kinda off topic, but how come the gas guage doesn't have equal distance between the marked increments? There are 5 increments, which i would assume to be full, 3/4, 1/2, 1/4, empty, but the 3/4 and 1/4 increments are closer to the extremes (full and empty) than to the middle. Anyone else notice this?

Also, protejay5, your location made me laugh. Kinda reminds of where Winona Ryder comes from in Mr. Deeds...Winchestertonfieldville, Iowa

There is a great Seinfeld episode with Kramer and Newman doing exactly that. They eventually decide that fuel is a scam and completely start going nuts about... of course they eventually run out.

Do you drive off immediately after you refuel? If you pump gas into the tank, fuel will splash around and it's gonna stir up the crap at the bottom. So unless you wait for a few hours until that stuff has settled (after you refuel), it's gonna have the same effect.

If you have a good amount of fuel already in the tank, the heavy sediment will not get spashed around as much. If the tank is nearly dry, the more the sediment will be moved around.

How about hard cornering?

if you run your tank empty everytime then the sediment doesnt have a chance to build up

and

the middle part is larger that the outer parts on the guage cause it is curved and not straight

i believe the light is very correct; when mine comes on it takes 12.0 gallons before the pump clicks off, every time. i then can push another 1/2 gallon in.....

i have been close to 50 miles when the light has come on driving easliy.....risky though since out cars have a 14.4 gallon tank.....

maybe its my light then . but manytimes its come on then turned itself off and not come back on for another 30-40miles...

actually there should be a 6th increment. The 50-70 miles i get from above full to the full line.
