EGR Valve

My CX-7 has about 35k miles on it. The engine light came on and the dealer said the EGR valve needs to be replaced. It cost $900. Has anyone else had a problem with their EGR valve? (or how it gets damaged?) I took a look at the replaced part and it looks fine to me.

Had ours replaced at 35k too. It should be covered under the 3/36 bumper to bumper.

should be covered 8yrs/80k per EPA law or 5yr 60k powertrain. its part of emissions control and your engine.

Only certain parts of the emissions system is covered under that federal EPA law. Some states have emissions laws that supersede the federal EPA laws.

my understanding is that federal law is the minimum. if you want to go above and beyond then ok.....but not the other way around

ie cali and smog control
speed limits (if you want to go lower than ok, but cant go higher)
etc

either way its part of the engine and thus covered in the 5yr 60k

Your understanding is correct on the emissions thing. The problem with that is that the federal is much more lax than the California emissions act that several states follow. So if you are in one of the states that has adopted Cali's standards then you should be covered.

The EGR is not covered under powertrain warranty either. IT is not considered an internal lubricated part nor is it listed as an "other" item that is covered. Pretty crappy.

oh really? well, it was my mom who brought it in and the engine light was on. and i guess they kind of cheated her out of it...

do you think this is something i can talk to Mazda corporate about? how i'm barely out of the 36k warranty? i talked to someone who did this and mazda footed the bill for a catalytic converter fix.

Yes definitely talk to the Mazda rep in this case. If no satisfaction with Mazda, then I'd check a good local independent.

Damn! I hope the $900 was installed. If not, you got screwed. I found an EGR valve for $339 from mazdapartscenter.com Hope I am not a bearer of bad news.

i called a mazda rep and they said they'll follow up with the dealer to see why it needed to be replaced. but aside from that it doesn't seem to have set anything in motion :/

Do you know what code tripped your check engine light?

Mine just went on and I checked it with a scanner and it is code P401, which is EGR pressure lost.

in my old protege that was a common code, the fix was to clean the EGR, not replace it. it came out with just a couple screws, spray some carb cleaner in there and it was good to go for another 10k or so..
