ok i just got my msp dynoed saturday and it came out at 155hp. i always thought the dyno test was done in 3rd gear but for some reason this place does them all in 4th gear. i have smic hard pipes, greddy type rs bov and stock bpv, perrin j-pipe back exhaust, kartboy hangers, awr front motor mount and perrin short shifter...isnt stock horsepower like 151 or something to the wheels? im new to this so im also wondering what everyone means by getting tuning done..is that like the unichip or flash? thanks for all the info.

The car should have more then 155whp with the stuff you have on the car. When the MSP was advertised mazda claimed it had 170 hp which actually veries, cause of the boost and a lot of other factors.

I'm sure other people have input.
Do you have the print out from the dyno, if you do get it scanned and link it here.

155 seems low but then again you have no pcm or any kind of fuel/timing management. Should be higher though anyways. As for the 4th vs 3rd gear thing, it really varies on cars but general rule is that closest to 1:1, which in our cars is 4th.

also, was this a mustang dyno? might be a reason why number is lower. It is more accurate.

155 sounds about right, remember the 170 is not what the msp is getting to the wheels. The only performance mod that you have is the exhaust, the hardpipes and bov are not going to do anything, if so maybe 1-2 hp. The hangers, short shifter and motor mounts do zero for hp increase. Tuning is when you change the parameters of the of the engine which is done though the engine control unit (ECU). With the real basic bolt on mods which is what you have so far, only a ecu flash would be suggested but in my opinion not necessary. If you decide for a turbo or go really intense on NA (naturally aspired, which is real expense and not worth and therefore if you want a lot of power you should go FI) you will need a piggy back, but more suggested a stand alone ECU to tune the engine so it runs smoothly and correctly.

You can read about anything you need to know here. Just perform a search and you will find everything you need.

155 doesn't seem low if it was on a mustang dyno. Stock dynos have been in mid 140s.

And yeah, generally you are supposed to dyno a car in the gear which is closest to 1:1, I'm not sure how important that is to the accuracy of power measurement, but from what I've seen it really varies between the dyno operators. Some do it in 3rd gear although it's not 1:1.

thanks

thanks for all the info. yea it was a mustang dyno and i knew that most of the mods i have arent really horsepower mods. im thinking about getting the fmic and unichip next.

Did you have a baseline on that dyno with the MSP still stock? I was only at 143 whp on our local Dynojet but went to 169 whp after SMIC, CAI and Vibrant exhaust.

no baseline i just went by what sport compact said in their review were a stock msp had 151hp to the wheels...im gonna try taking pics of the results right now maybe i can get close enough to actually see them. yea im debating on either going with the ********** smic or build a fmic. i forgot i do have the AEM Injen CAI that was on it when i bought it.

Need a better close up of that print out. I would reccomend a FMIC unless you just plan on not boosting more then 10psi, but then again your choice.
HighBoost still makes a FMIC and Corksport is coming out with one soon.

I think that with SMIC and exhaust you should be getting around ~175 WHP. Do you have a boost gauge?

Check for loose bolts or leaks around the manifold and vacuum lines.
Reset the ecu too next time before you dyno.

yeah you should be over 160 with the full exhaust like that. and the hard pipes help. what was the temp when you tested it.

i dont know what the temp was i know is was a little chilly cause it was like 8pm and getting dark i was the last run. i think im gonna try restarting the ecu see if that helps im waiting for my CEL simulator to come in the next couple days put that on then restart the ecu. next dyno is june 17th im trying to get a GHL or corksport downpipe before then.

the stock horse power

the hp for a stock msp is 170hp thats with the turbo and all the other stuff that the speed comes stock with... so why it says you have 155hp i dont know unless the hp they rate it at is from the engine and not the wheels. but tuning is about building a car with better aftermarket parts and also the body.. i will be getting the unichip here shortly which from what i was told buy someone who got it says it is definatly worth it.. you also need to upgrade your wires to 8.5mm ones magstar are good or msd.. plus change your plugs to the ngk iridium plugs there 6.99 apiece but worth it. also i recomend you buy the injen coldair intake i have that as well it definatly helps. i hope i helped answere your questions. happy tunning

170 is bhp(brake horse power) and is the way all manufacturers measure the potential of the engine. When people go to measure it they measure it on a dyno that measures whp(whel horse power) that measures the power that actually gets from the engine to the ground(drivetrain loss etc). that's why you see 155whp instead of 170.

Actually, most of us consider tuning to be the tuning of air/fuel mixture and timing to safely take advantage of other modifications, increased boost pressure and etc. This can only be done effectively on our cars with some sort of engine management system. Unichip is a piggyback EMS, which controls a/f mixture, timing, boost and is capable of controlling many other things (I've been running unichip for a while now, my only gripe is that Unichip tuners are few and far between in my area). There are also several user-programable standalone EMS units and combinations such as the DSM AFC paired with a J&S Safeguard to control timing.
