DSC turned off - loud bang

Just joined the forum today and coincidentally this happened to me today. I was tooling along with DSC turned off and got on the throttle in 2nd to show my buddy what the car could do. Naturally, both wheels spun up and were spinning around happily when we ran over a manhole cover and WHAM!!! I heard the loudest most unpleasent metallic smack I've had the displeasure of hearing. I looked in my rear view and the tranny wasn't laying in the road, and the car is still drving fine and isnt leaking anything. My first thought is that the more slippery manhole cover followed by regular asphalt confused/shocked the limited slip. Any thoughts/opinions/conjetures?

Ooo Ooo i know! i know! stop screwing around with the car and drive it right...

Wow, thanks a lot. It sounds like you are a veritable treasure trove of general automotive design and theory. Thanks again.

Yeah, my theory would be that it was a shock to the trans or diff also.

In any case Matthew1785 does have a point, next time you want to open your baby up go right ahead but just be a little more careful where it is! We all make mistakes but you live and learn. Just be thankful nothing broke haha.

I had an experience similar to yours once. I was passing on a highway bridge and didn't realize it was a steel gate bridge in the middle and ended up breaking my tires loose on the metal. Needless to say my front tires were all scratched up for a while until they wore down more. I'm just thankful one of them didn't tear or something horrible.

i think thats happend to me when i hit a bump while floring it , like i was switinching lanes in the rain and floored it and those bump line spacers int the road and heard that bam noise , its the tire spinning and then temeralrly gets traction on the bump thing. Its no big deal dude!

Probably spun on the metal and then gained traction on the pavemant and caused some abrupt wheel hop.

chill out..

what I love is when people admit they screw around with their car something goes wrong or they think something went wrong then they come onto the forums asking if anyone else has done the same thing and experienced the same issue...

I'm pretty sure you don't need to know automotive technology to tell someone to drive the car right instead of screwing around with it and driving it like an idiot

so in any case +1 to you being an idiot

Now we just sit back and wait for the first failure he has to be blammed on Mazda and what not.

Myself I drive my car appropriately so if something goes wrong I can confidently say it was a deffective part. However if like some around here I drove like an idiot I wouldnt question why a part broke and point blame to the MFR.

LOL, go figure why he is having problems? Ignorance is fun to sit back and watch, isnt it?

Actually I'm a picses, and a degreed mechanical engineer. But you are right about me driving like a yo-yo. I need to be more judicious in deciding when and when not to drive like that. All this talk about the motor mount problem does not sit well with me.

well the first step to treatment is admitting you are an idiot which you did

good job!

on to step #2

LOL!! Right on man, I take it step two is dealing with this lurking engine mount issue.

Ive heard the sound too, its a terrible sound, I figured wheel hop or the springs chattering, it seemed to loud to be safe though, I just read a thread about some people having loose suspension parts, maybe check that out...

Put it up on the ramps this morning and made a thorough examination of the undercarrige. Visually everything looks OK. All bolts are tight. Those half shafts are MASSIVE. Is it just me or does everybody else have the hole for oil filter access on the diffuser located about three inches away from where it should be?
