DSC Off - Some Observations

Where are you pulling that 98% number from?

I shift smoothly in this car all the time. I also have bad days where I don't. More bad days than I do in my other comparatively soft Mazda3, but that's what happens when you have a clutch that is more of a light switch than it is progressive. It's not surprising that an aggressive, grabby clutch with limited feedback like in our car doesn't lend itself to easy shifting or that the driver needs to pay more attention to being smooth, but don't go around saying no one can shift smoothly. Many of us can. Many of us do. Many of us don't blame electronic nannies on days when we don't.

Sorry about the 5spd/6spd comment (doh)

You're right, the car can be driven smoothly but it really does require your attention to do so. Its not nearly as natural as other MT's I've driven although I will admit that its part of the cars charm. Seems every great performance car has its quirks and I think this happens to be the MS3's quirk. Even with DSC Off I've had jerky starts but it happens infrequently and I don't really need to pay attention to the shifting with the DSC off.

Maybe it is a placebo affect as somone mentioned before, doesn't matter because it works for me.

All I'm going to add is that after alternating DSC on/off for a week or so, I see nothing consistent changing in straight line driving except that acceleration seems a tiny bit stronger/smoother with DSC off. Launching may have been just a tad bit smoother (not talking about race launches, just general stoplight activity) but even then, it was so close that it'd be hard to pin anything on the DSC.

Probably going to be hard to really nail down any consistent differences without runninga slew of identical back to back tests in identical circumstances, etc., and I don't think it'd be worth the time & effort.

Obviously, with DSC off, cornering feels more natural, more organic. I like being in control in those situations, and I think I'm going to try & train myself to consistently turn DSC off except in wet weather or other hazardous conditions.

Can you also turn off the Speed6's DSC completely off as well? I've got a buddy with one and we tried the same sequence to turn it off as used for the MS3 but with no results. Has anyone tried doing this on the MS6? :0

Yes. You simply have to push the button.

This "trick" involving holding down the button while starting doesn't turn it off any more completely than by simply pushing the button as described in the owner's manual.

Just to toss something out there as well. There was a lot of testing a while back with DSC on and off showing that you got more boost in 1st and 2nd with DSC off then you did with it on. Thus it only makes sense that if you turn it off you are in fact running on a different table inside the ECU. It was so long ago I can't remember the details. I even did the test myself and posted my results. I believe it was like 8psi in 1st max with DSC on and 12PSI with it off or something like that.

Just something to chew on :)

interesting observations...interesting responses (star trek one takes the trophy)...but most interesting is the arguing...

i say this:

leave it to the driver's preference...
if having DSC/TCS off or on improves one's driving experience so be it...if it makes the car more enjoyable to drive then that's all that really matters...

as for me personally i like to drive w/ both of them off except on rainy days...
not going to state my reasons why as of yet...dont want to have an "internet thug" try to come bully me (loser)

hopefully the thread can calm down a little bit more and a civil discussion can take place again

i have a 09 and saw this on autoblog

yall think this goes for the Speeds as well, im assuming so

Yup!

VIN range affected:

JM1BK****91 187378 to 256910

(built between July 1, 2008 and Nov 24th, 2008)

Here's the link to the actual document: Non-Compliance PDF

From the PDF:

"The timing of mailing or owner notification letters is not finalized at this time because it will take some time to procure the necessary remedy parts".

Lucky me, my VIN falls within that range!

Guess I'll contact my dealer and get high up on the list to get this fixed.

&*%#!!! 16 hours after I install my first minor performance mod (Forge BPV), and I find out I'm gonna have to pull it again already. $^&#! *@&%!

Yeah, I'm gonna hold off installing the Cobb SRI. I know it's not that big of a deal but my Speed is only a month old and I don't want any hassle at the dealership.

Hmmm. I had a defective yaw sensor that was warranted on my 08.5 around the fall of last year. Hope they didnt replace mine with one that needs a recall

wow, I read the entire thread and I have to say, I'm kinda baffled. I've only had my Speed3 for a little over a month and I don't have any problem driving it really smoothly at low speeds. I can creep away from a stoplight by just gently easing out the clutch, giving only the tiniest little squirt of gas. I almost can roll away from a stop at idle, just like I could in my old Z28. This probably has something to do with the upgraded rear motor mount, as there is less TQ lost through engine movement. I let a buddy of mine take it for a spin yesterday, he had never driven a Mazda before in his life, and he just ran up and down the gears smoothly with no grinding, mis-shifts, or complaints. as you let up off the pedal the clutch engages earlier then on most cars, but this actually helps with quicker shifts and I rather enjoy it. I don't mean to come in here with my second post and be a dick, I just really don't understand the problem.

I've messed around with turning the DSC off and haven't really noticed much difference as far as straight line accelleration. tossing it around corners is more fun with DSC off but straight line I can't tell the difference. maybe I'm doing it wrong.

I also tried the "hold DSC button while starting the car" trick and it didn't do anything. I thought it was supposed to make the DSC and TCS lights come on in your dash, letting you know that they are disengaged. Am I doing that wrong too? does this "trick" even work?

Hold the DSC button before putting the key in...try that...it should work regardless if you hold the button before you start the car...

the dsc light should come on as well as the light with the "skidding car" on the dash

Ugh...

...and around we go again.

Folks-

The traction control is off when you press the "DSC OFF" button. This "trick" doesn't do anything...
