Drove a 3 today

So there I was eating supper, and I get a phone call..

"look outside your window" he says

Here's my dealers manager with a big grin, and a Mazda 3, black, 5spd, base model

I called him all sorts of names for teasing me with getting a new car.( only 6000kms on my speed for gods sake :) )....then got over it and went for a drive.

WAlking up to the base model, it's got jetta written all over it from the side on view. The base has the hub caps that even resemble the jetta's.

It was dark out, but I could still enjoy what is truly a nice little car. The dash has a cool factor at night. They got the red theme right on this one for sure. Very 6'ish of course, but it has it's own look as well. Wait until you see it, you'll know.

Seats...well, base model, still weren't too bad to sit in. Very dark out so I couldn't get a really good look.

getting in and driving.....first word that came to mind was

SOLID.

this car feels so rigid and solid it's crazy. Turn the wheel and she responds very quickly, and handles far better then any other econo car I've driven. You guys driving p5's, and ES's...guess what, this base model may be better then yours to a degree. can't wait to drive it with some 17's on it and good rubber.

Shifter was better. Not Honda'ish yet, but defintely smoother then a P5/ES. better then my speed?????? not sure. Clutch was very easy to use, and enagages in a nice spot. Better then the older Protege's for sure overall. Power from the 148hp version wasn't too bad. Granted, my speed will walk away from this thing in any gear, but if you compare it to other econo cars....ie civic, neon...you know em all...this thing has a lot more power, and rides smoother as well.

Overall, I was very impressed. Mazda has something going on right with this car. Nice, amazingly solid, quick handling, nice power, and looks good, and not too $$$. Still not sold on the rear looks, but with a decent spoiler, she'll be good to go. Can't wait to see the gfx.

Oh, and finally GOOD headlights. Much better then the stock Protege's.

I won't be trading my speed for it. But it is a nice car. You guys bitching and complaining about all these little details......drive it....then comment on it. until then, I thinkk you might be eating your own words.

I did tell my dealer...if/when the mazdaspeed 3 comes out....start advertising mine for sale :)

You'll be very impressed when you get a chance to drive the 2.3L version.

Yeah, i drove two of them today. The 2.0L with a manual T and a 2.3L with the sportronic. I loved the manual. It was so much smoother with more noticable power than my MP3. I hated the automatic because i think sport autos are stupid to begin with. I can't wait til they get a 2.3L with a manual. I loved the feel of the car, inside and out. I thought that the turn signal noise might get kinda annoying, but we'll see. Lots of room with tonnes of cup holders(even in the rear seats) I'm actually considering trading in the mp3. We'll see what happens and how the money flows. I really hate the stereo. I don't know what the hell i could do with that? No idea where to even put an aftermarket stereo? All in all though, i give it a complete thumbs up, and i hated it when i first saw it:cool:
