if you need to tell if the car has side bags, look for an airbag sign either across the top trim by the headliner or on the outboard side of the seats (I can't remember if the 3 has seat mounted or curtain airbags). All airbags are required by law to be labeled, so just look for the tags.

and just for the record, yes, the 3 has optional side bags. and coming from an airbag engineer, i would suggest you all get them if you have a choice...

side bags are IN the seat (side closest to the door), as well as the A and C pillars
not sure about the B though

No airbags in the B-pillars. Also it will say "SRS airbag" if there's one there. It doesn't say ABS.

Except in the 2006 US model where all "s" trim comes with ABS, and you can add the airbags.

The Mazda3 S Hatchback Touring comes with side and curtain airbags standards. I know, because that's why I got the Touring trim..... Also, I'm quite sure that the ABS/SAB/SAC is just one single package if you ask it as an option on other models. So, you get ABS + side and curtain airbags.

i- SAB/SAC/ABS optional
i-touring- SAB/SAC/ABS optional
s- SAB/SAC optional, ABS standard
s-touring/GT- SAB/SAC/ABS standard

You are correct though mazda3rookie that you can't get the side airbags without the ABS. You can however get the ABS without the side airbags if you get the base s trim.
