Difficult HIDDEN HITCH install on CX-9! What was your experience installing one?

I ordered a Hidden Hitch from eTrailer.com and it came last week. So this weekend I went abput installing it. the job was not as simple as the video from eTrailer would make you believe.

First, the hitch slid into position with ease. Lifted the rear of the car up about 12 inches and the hitch just kind of kind of rolled it into position .... very easy! .... then I started threading the bolts in.

First I put one bolt on each side to hold the hitch up into position. After I had all bolts on the drivers side very (!) losely installed giving them just about two turns into the threads I began to finish up by installing last two the passenger side bolts. It became very quickly apparent that one of the three bolts would not go in whatsoever because the holes did not line up well enough. The hitch holes did not match the frame holes. Granted it was only about 1/8th of an inch but since the threads of the bolts/holes are fine thread you have to be able to perfectly line up the bolt and hole to install them. On this side ... no way!. So I removed the hitch again and got my dremel tool out triming two of the passenger side holes just a tiny bit. Putting the hitch back into position all bolts finally installed.

So now that I had all bolts losely started into their holes I centerd the hitch into fianl position to tighten them. What I immediately noticed was the fact that there was a space of about 1/4 inch on each side of the hitch mounting tabs between the hitch and the CX-9 frame rails. The hitch is approx. 1/2 inch or so too narrow. I figured I never would be able to pull this to close the gap, but tightening the bolts I was able to close the gap. This happened by partially pulling the hitch mounting tabs to the outside and partially by pulling the frame rail out by 1/16 inch or so.

Bottom line .... I am disappointed with the fit of this hitch beeing that narrower than the frame rails. In the end everything is fine and I am sure this baby won't budge, but pulling the frame and hitch tabs this hard is not my favorite way to install. A smaller gap I would understand, but this was more than it should have been.

What are your experiences?? Did you have similar gaps when putting the hitch in??

Ohh, jsut in case.... my car did never have an accident or rear end damage. It is pristine and just like out of the factory. So it is not the cars fault.

Same here.
You have to install bolts on both sides progressively.
Like tightening the bolts on wheels. Thread all bolts in. Tighten them one by one, side by side, alternatively.
I started by tightening one side, only to find out that the gap on the other is way to big.... 1/4" in my case as well.

My hitch which is a Curt, and I got it from Amazon for $123, fit just right. I actually had morre of an issue getting it into place as it was a snug fit.

This seems to be a frequent (if not common) problem for Hidden Hitches.
The gap tends to be larger (1/2"). You can't tighten one side then move on to the other.
The bolts that come with the hitch are short. You have to tighten both sides alternatively.

Exactly, same thing I experienced on a few of these

Not to dug up an old thread here, but I just installed a Curt on my '08. Took about a half an hour and other than hitting my head on the hitch (ouch) I had no problems. It was so easy I plan to remove it and store it in the shed as we only need it for our annual vacation trip.

True. Doesn't make much sense to carry 30lb around if you are not gonna need it for a while.

I bought a Hidden Hitch but couldn't get it installed. The frame rails is 36" wide but the hitch is only about 34 1/4". I couldn't get both sides to attach to the frame no matter how I tried.

Installed on my 2013 GT AWD yesterday. It is a very snug fit. Not wanting to scratch anything up I opted to remove the passenger muffler. It was 2 bolts and maybe a 3-min job. Hitch went right in and it was done. Took maybe 20 min total for my brother and me to do it on our backs with no jack. Got mine at amazon as well as it was the best price by almost $35.

Bummer, it sounds like it's out of spec.

I went with the Curt hitch from eTrailer. Very easy install although there was a few milimeters of gap I had to progressively tighten.

Be sure to re-torque your bolts after a while, I just went to do mine and they were all looser than they should have been!

I didn't like how the curt (pretty sure it's the curt) uses the square tubing and is bent, versus hidden hitch has the round tubes that are cut at the correct angle and welded. HH just seemed a little better made to me so that's what I went with.

I did notice that there was a gap on one side when I had the other side tightened down so I loosened the tight side, and as others suggested tightened in an alternating pattern and now, no gaps on either side.

I actually took a bunch of pictures to do a write up here. I did find it necessary to remove the spare tire winch in order to fit a torque wrench into the rear 2 bolts on the passenger side.
