turbo colts, looking for a p5
I havent had the chance yet to check out the engine bay of an msp or mp3.
I understand the mp3 is a NT motor, and msp is a tiny turbo'ed motor.

What is the difference between the p5 and the other two?

What is our motor's name? is it the same is what is on the vin plate?

I would like to see my options for if i ever decide to turbo the p5. If its quick bolt on stuff like changine out ecu, oil pan, ex. manifolds/turbo, etc...

Thanks for the space.

FS-DE engine, all same engine but the mp3 and i think msp have different tuning to them and of course the turbo in the msp.

MP3 has different ECU, No VTCS and "sport" exhaust. MSP has turbo (of course) and its own ecu and I think it goes by FS-DET....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

they are pretty much all the same.

p5= lowest on the chain
mp3= not much higher...but its mainly due to ecu. their intake mani is a little different also.
msp= king when it comes to protege...its differences are turbo (durr) and ecu. then the tranny has an lsd and depending on what year p5 you have, it has better tranny internals.

So all motors are the 2.0l?
IF so, i take it the p5 has typical compression motor, maybe the mp3 a higher compression motor, and the msp has the low compression and forced air.

If its like the talons and colts and hyundai elantra/sonata's, they are all the same motor, with the difference of basically compression and bore/stroke.
Meaning we can easily swap in ex. mani, turbo, injectors, mafs, ecu, oil pan, etc.... instant roughly 50hp for under $1G.

Then add more boost, and fuel control, then the fun begins.

LSD is a nice option to have from stock. I have to look into this. I thought i would have to consider a quaiffe after x-amount of hp like in my colt.

Okay, this is nice to know.

NOW, how about the good old BP motors, like in the old 323 turbo's. I love that motor, it has crossed my mind to swap something like a 1.8lmiata motor in there and turbo. But, the FS motor turbo'ed might do too. If the wife lets.

Cheers for now.

Cha.

i d tell you the better easy performance worth the price would be a direct msp turbo 2.0l engine swap....

for the miata 1.8l,dont forget that its a totally different engine;first, rear wheel drive-second,its not a side way engine like in the p5,its an inline centered from front to back...third,would need to much mods-money-time spent,to acheive about the same hp.....

and the 1.8 bpt, well good engines, but for the fitting,i dont know....

some guys even did the 2.5l klze v6 in some proteges, but even there, you better have the wallet for it....

i d stay with the msp motor swap option,or simply put a turbo kit to the one already in...(glare)

All the engines are the same...Mazda simply put a turbo kit on a protege, added suspension parts a body kit, sound system, LSD and called it a day. With the MP3 everything is the same minus the turbo and LSD, and a it has a more aggressive ECU with advanced timing. All protege 2.0's are the same....AFAIK. Relatively weak internals are good for 230whp, or a max of 250whp with god like tuning. The 1.6L protege engine can take abusive ammounts of boost do to better internals, 18psi if I remember. The 1.8L is just a destroked 2.0L.

The compression is the same on all of them... MSP gets away with it's compression by boosting only 6.5 stock, typically 7 PSI is doable on most engines fairly easily. Mazda just wanted to give it some grunt. MP3 gets more power from aggressive timing and better intake & exhaust, not more compression.

IM gonna check my engine compression now that im on the topic.

So the FS motors are low compression or regular? 9.5-10:1?
The turbo colts are 7.8:1 and run only 7psi stock for the early generation, and 10psi stock for the later generation, both no IC.

I shall research this some more, just for curiosity sake.

You would get 10 more hp. It's cheaper to find a friend with an MP3 and have a mazda tech download the program and flash it to your ecu.

all protege 2.0's have the same compression, I think 9.2:1.

All 3 motors (P5, MP3, & MSP) are identical is almost every way except a few things.

P5: our baseline motor, bottom of the barrel, 130hp.
MP3: better ecu, and a sport exhaust.
MSP: Turbo (and related items such as piping and intercooler), ecu, exhaust, and cams (I think the cams just have a little more duration, not sure)

99% of your questios should be answered by checking out the protege FAQ's by the MAN (there's a link in his sig)

Happy modding

so if the p5 and msp engines are basically the same why do so many people say you will blow your motor if you turbo your p5? couldnt you just do a low boost like with the msp. a 6.5? isnt that a safe level?

How much cheaper? I live in the middle of ******* no where, chances are pretty slim that I could find someone with an MP3 to download from. Is it worth it to get this done? I haven't read about anyone else doing this... just the usual intake/exhaust mods

People are more likely to blow the motor in a P5 because most aftermarket kits have a lot more ability to run higher boost numbers than the stock protege.

they are also more likely because they often times try to turbo a p5 with an automatic tranny that cant take more than 5psi safely

But what if you did like a HiBoost on a 5-spd? You could still run the same 6.5-7 psi of boost safely with an ECU reflash/new ECU right?

If you keep it at 6-7 psi you will be safe for a while. And the ecu reflash you speak of would be a piggyback or standalone computer. haltech f10x or e6x
