Differences between Mazda3 2.0 and Pro5 2.0

I want to know what the differences between the 2 engines. I am assuming 2 thing happened to get the higher HP.
1) They went with another Ford engine and were able to get the power that way.
2) They upgraded the old 2.0 that they have had. If this is the case then I want to know the modifacation that they did to the engine.

Brand new engines, called the L-series. They're complety different from the FS.
2.0 liter engine:

Both L-series engines are supposed to be CRAZY strong, with tonnes of potential. The Mazda6 2.3 Drag car is supposed to be capable of upwards of 1200hp.
 
Hmm, so the L series Mazda motors are the Ford Duratecs? I guess that's why they are "L" series. They are built in Lima, Ohio.

Duratecs have some decent aftermarket support and they are pretty strong. I've heard of 250+ HP motors N/A.
 
There are differences between the Mazda and Ford versions though. The Mazda 2.3 has a different head obviously. Just like the 3.0 in the Mazda6.
 
mmm interesting. I thought the new "L" series is designed and built by Mazda Japan.
I dont think they are the same as the Duratecs. ( Please correct me if i'm wrong)
I know the new Ford Focus will be based on Mazda 3 platform or is it the other way around? Anybody?

It's a joint effort. Co-developed by Volvo for the S40/V40, new Focus, and of course the Mazda3. Volvo did the safety engineering, Mazda quality control and Ford engineered the chassis. Although it's a Ford engineered block, the Mazda engines are assembled Japan, and are not exactly the same engine.

The L3 VE makes more power than the PZEV.

Well now that said, could it be possible to transplant the 2.3 into our 3rd Generation MP? I have not seen the engine up close but are the engine mounts in the right areas or are they different. I know one would have to use the ECU from the 2.3 though and the transmission. Or even the 2.0 can be bored out to a 2.3 L. Just a thought to ponder. (dunno) (scratch)
 
yeah the block is ford, internals is mazda to my understanding, its quite a bit diffrent than a duratec engine
