detonation or not?

how do you tape those vids??? from like a digital camera, like cybershot or from a real camera? but yah, i need to start doing that so i can see whats happening

Could it be due to a limitation of the air flow meter? A lot harder to say since your car is not stock :-/

could be injectors maxed, or limited maf!

I film that with a real camera Sony DCR-TRV250

Well if you keep lean readings like that on a heavy load or for long, temps will rise in a breeze...piston rings may fry or detonation may occur and break something before frying pistons.

that's my guess too..but it seems that after all the times i've heard it, my engine would have blown by now...but who knows...

i installed my msd knock sensor sunday.. i am detecting knock above 5000 rpms. i having been boosting above that untill i get my timing nder controll, and im gonna add some fuel up top. maybe bring my AFR down into the low 11's see if that helps.

This was 142$ and took 30 minutes to install.. This should be a must for anyone upping the boost on a msp or a boosted protege. I never heard any detonation.. but the sensor is fine untill 5k than starts blinking and beeping.. not good, but im glad i caught it in time, i hope i havent done to much damage. I will post pics and a thread when i get around to it.

sounds like a good preventative mod....its just strange that alot of people are boosting over stock and haven't noticed or seem to worry about detonation...maybe i'm over-paranoid, but this is my daily driver and i'd like it to last awhile...its not like i have a spare engine sitting in my garage

PAULMP3

whered you get that msd knock sensor??? you got any pics of it how it looks and operates?? thanks a lot man, maybe something i might be picking up very soon..im afraid of blowing up my engine...

what kinda comp you got in your turboed mp3??

if that was detonation wouldnt it have destoryed your motor or at least made it slower (the car)?

It can take time... this isn't a rotary where if you detonate once the thing pops.

yeah, thats true....I thought using the copper plugs would allow me to boost a little more safely, but i guess not

hey paulmp3 where exactly did you thread the msd knock sensor into?

Just curious because i think i am gonna use it too.

i dont feel like searching now, but i got it off www.jegs.com.

The display unit is hideously ugly, for now i have the wire just hanging in fornt of the stereo and have it placed in the pocket next to my wideband, i might try and open it up and make a custom face for it so i dont have to look at the cheap looking display. but it serves a purpose so i will get over it.

as for the sensor itself, it is threaded and there are a few places you can put it.., i put mine in the front f the engine below the exhaust manifold into a threaded unused hole in the block. There are a few to choose from. One wire runs through the firewall to this sensor.

when i get around to it i will start a thread and show pictures of the install.

yep thats it.. ewwww..

the j&s is the ultimate tool to get, it actually does something if hearing knock.. but ths is 1/4 the price and it is a nice heads up warning that there might be a problem, and to get out of boost.

I guess it depends on other variables, but I'm going to have to go down to 7-8 psi to be on the safe side...kinda sucks. I suppose w/ the advanced timing after the re-flash and piss poor Cali 91 octane thats what happens...
