Deleting resonators and muffler?

bump. i'm going to be doing this soon. i'm considering a test pipe, and removing 2 of the 3 restrictions, either the two resonators or one res and the muffler.

any updated news or vids of this?

Ok jst went yesterday and got straight pipe from the downpipe back, i deleted the 2nd cat, both resonators, and the muffler, and replaced it with 3" pipe....sounds really awsome, pretty mean growl...and at cruising speed on the highway you still cant here it, its not much louder than stock, and has no drone, well jst wanted to tell my 2 cents

hey phil check this guys post. He removed all 4 items. I think I might do this tomorrow since you called our dealership and they said taking off the second cat will not be a service/warranty issue. Sounds like this guy likes it!

yeah. that seems like a pretty viable option. that straight piping requires some custom muffler work from the shop, i wonder what the price of that would be.

jcurry - can you enlighten us?

I already have the 2nd resonator and muffler removed, sounds good but not loud enough for me. I went back today to get them to remove the 1st resonator and the second cat.

In CA he said no one will remove a cat for me, regardless of it being behind all the o2 sensors. He said it would not throw a cel at all but that it wouldnt pass smog with that 2nd cat out because of what they put in the back of the tailpipe during smog. He said it is called a "CLEANUP CAT".

So with no success of being able to remove my 2nd cat i just had the 1st resonator removed. VERY nice sound improvement, its a little louder and bubblier. Inside the car its not much louder, maybe a little more grumble and bass, but outside the car when he revved it sounded pretty powerful.

SO to anyone thinking about modding their muffler. I have all 3 items in the back removed and it sounds great! But for anyone in CA who wants the 2nd cat removed, they say it can't be done, so it looks like I will be forced to buy a test pipe...

I'm curious if some one has a good sound clip.

Around where I live theres a guy who did something similar, and it sounds like complete rice when hes WOT.

I think I'll stick with installing the Borla.

i got the muffler shop here to put 3" from the downpipe back, all new piping, hangers etc...they only charged me 175 bucks after taxes, and if i ever have any problems with it all i have to do is take it back and thell fix wat evers wrong... ill trade someone the stock exhaust for this one if thell give me like 50 bucks on top of it, im fixn to sell the car and get me a civic or something due to gas and no one seems to want exhaust on the car, and my dad threw my stock one away by accident!!!!PM me if your interested!!

will cutting off the 2 resonators fail me for inspection? cuz i got a catted cpe downpipe but i want the sound a bit deeper ...

nvm.. i took time to read all 9 pages lol

One (middle) resonator delete impressions.

Had my middle resonator deleted and replaced with a straight pipe.

So yeah, I just drove the car back from the muffler shop, and I swear they made it quieter. Only time it gurgles a little bit more is when you're really on it, but then I'm rocketing forward into the bumper of the car infront of me, so I couldnt really test it out.

The car seems to be a bit more responsive though, making it a bit easier to drive. I wasnt expecting thundering roars or anything, but I thought removing a sound deadening device with just a straight pipe would make more of a difference. Cost only $59.

So to those of you contemplating a single resonator delete, it BARELY makes any noticable loudness difference. Even in a tunnel or parking lot its hardly different.

my mind is set on the muffler/resonator and the 2nd resonator closest to the muffler thing.

Not sure if i want all 3 resonators out

can't decide...

Middle resonator gone, not sure what to take out next. So far after reading this entire thread, I've concluded that

removing the oval-shaped muffler/resonator at the back of the car will add bass and deepness

removing the other resonator closes to the engine compartment will give a throatier burbly sound like a WRX.

Some people like the sound only after the last oval muffler/resonator is removed, some prefer to leave it on.

Not sure which way to go here!

I like to hear the individual pulses in the growling of the exhaust as I accelerate. Which should I go for!?

I drove a 2008 subaru WRX and almost bought it instead of the MS3 just because of the exhaust note alone!

I didn't though because of the bad transmission, seats, and interior quality.

I'm not sure how anyone could dislike the sound those cars make

number one is definitely a 'hotter' sound like a high strung V8 or something, where as #2 is a deep bass-bin. WHAT SAY YOU

Quick vote from friends around right now locks it at 3-2 in favor of #2.
