2013 Mazda CX-5 GT AWD
Hello:

Just wanted to share my experience and maybe get some feedback from fellow CX-5 owners or thread viewers.

Recently some of you might have noticed I posted a rattling noise coming from the trunk cargo cover area, and I was able to mend it by adding some soft foam spacers between cargo cover and trunk area mounting area.

But other noises have come up so I booked a day off work to drop it off to the dealership (OpenRoad Mazda in Port Moody)

I was on time for my 8:00 AM appointment, and talked to the service manager who was at the counter. I told him I had an appointment and described my concerns with the different noises. Before handing the key to him, we went over to my car and I showed him EXACTLY where the noises are coming from. (Trunk cargo cover mounting area, LCD touch panel making plastic noises when its been running for a while, and steering wheel shaft cover).

They did offer me a skyactiv Mazda 3 as a loaner car, so I left the dealership and went about my business.

As the day went on, I was monitoring the time, 12:00PM, 2:00PM...finally at 5:00 PM, I rushed over to the dealsership, realizing that they close at 5:30 PM, yet NO ONE from the dealership called me.

When I approached the counter, service rep named Adam was there, I just simply told him I was here to pick up the car. (Did not mention that no one called me even though they were going to close)

He handed over the keys, and gave me a service report. He said, with the trunk area cover noise, they adjusted the clearance, same with steering shaft cover, but could not duplicate touch screen noise.

When I returned over to my car, I checked the steering wheel cover. It was JUST AS LOOSE on the wiper chalk side as before, and there were OBVIOUS flat screw driver prying marks between the two pieces of plastic. Didn't check the cargo cover mount (a decision which I regret making). I went down to talk to Adam, stating that it was just as loose and seems nothing has changed. He said the technician DID reduce the gap ((boom02)...) Being already not happy that I had to book a day off work to bring my car to get it checked (Weekends are reserved for scheduled maintenance only...any warranty work must be done Monday to Friday). I asked him why do customers need to schedule around the dealership. He simply replied, we are only half staffed on Saturday. I said, why do customers have to book days off to fix something on their brand new car that should not have happened in the first place? He then said Mazda doens't cover these kind of work, and sometimes they only cover it for one year only. We (dealership) are the ones absorbing the cost. I then stated Mazda has a 3 year, 80,000km comprehensive warranty. Seeing how the conversation is just going in circles, I left the dealsership with a bitter taste in my mouth. On the way home there were indeed no rattles coming from the cargo cover. So that somewhat made me feel happier... Then fast forward one week....

One morning on the way to work I heard the same sound coming from rear of car. I immediately know its the cargo cover area. Then on the weekend I decided to take a look at what was happening. That was when I started to boil...

The so called "clearance adjustment" is nothing more than black electrical tape being stuffed into the cargo cover mounting hole on both sides....... (bang)(bang)(bang) I fixed it by removing the existing tape, then used soft velcro strip and enclosed the circumference of the mounting whole where the cargo cover would stick into.

I guess why I am feeling so upset is...not only did I have to book a day off work with my vacation, I waited for the dealership for the whole NINE HOURS, just for them to put electrical tape into the cargo cover mounting hole, and ugly prying marks between the steering wheel shaft cover.

This is not the first time this has happened as well. Soon after I took delivery of my car, I noticed the alignment was off so I booked an appointment with OpenRoad Mazda. They also didn't call me at all and I rushed down at 4:00 PM to get my car (dropped it off first then at 9:30AM, they close at 4:30 PM). When asking them where is my car, Adam laughed and said I forgot to call...

Also, when I did my first scheduled maintenance with them. Adam told me they also rotated tires, checked all tire pressure, including spare on top of the oil change, etc. I was at first very impressed with them, but upon checking my car...tires was not rotated (I know becasue front two tires still had tire dressing on, rear wheels didn't. And that is how it was when i dropped it off to them, and everything in my trunk is just EXACTLY the way it was. I highly doubt they would put everything back the way it EXACTLY was in my trunk).

I really don't know what I should do. My last car, Nissan Altima, was not the most reliable car, but at least MORREY Nissan/Infiniti treated me very well. Regardless of any maintenance, they asked if I wanted a courtsey car, and if I did, I get to pick which one I want. They were honest with the work they did...

Really hope I could get some advice from you guys....

Thank You for reading my long post, I really appreciate it

Regards,

Brian

Any other Mazda dealerships around?

Regarding the damage (flat screw driver prying marks) - I had a similar issue when my dash was removed to fix a rattle noise and they caused numerous damages to the paint, the trims, and the clock window believe it or not. Took pictures of the damage and emailed the Serivce Manager and made clear that this was not acceptable.

They replaced all the damaged parts no questions asked...

If I were you, I would go to another dealer for service as it seems OpenRoad Mazda doesn't seem to take customer service too seriously. Google+ reviews also seem to be in line with your experience and give OpenRoad a 15/30 "poor to fair" rating while Freeway Mazda which is just 20 minutes away got a 27/30 "extraordinary to perfection" rating.

Save yourself the stress and go to a dealership which will take care of you better. It would also be good to leave some feedback to someone in charge at OpenRoad and leave some feedback about your experience online (maybe also on google+) so others can make better informed decisions when choosing a dealer in your area.

I'd take Buger's advice. I bought mine at Freeway and have been happy (although no servicing due yet) They went out of their way to be helpful to me and they do try. I've heard lots of horror stories about OpenRoad in Port Moody as well. There is another dealer in Pitt Meadows as well, no info on how they are.

Hi Thank you for sharing. I did not buy fron Open Mazda because sales person I met lied about window eitching fees, sticker price on the window etc. but did not imagine the service department is also very bad. Go to another dealer and share your experience on the website. Perhaps you can write to some one at head office (not dealer level) as what you have gone through should not be normal nor acceptable in my opinion. Can you let me know what kind of mileage your are getting for city drive in Vancouver if you don't mind. Thanks

Thanks for the input, really appreciate it. I will be going over to the dealership and talk with the manager tomorrow. I hope it will be a productive trip.

CX5BC, unfortunately I dont know the pure city drive fuel consumption. But I have been keeping a record since I bought the car.
I do mostly city (70% - 80%). Even on highway I would drive to Langley most of the time. And on average I drive around 500KM a week. and the best I have observed in mixed driving is 7.8L/100KM, and 9.8L/100KM being the worst. I do live in a higher elevation, so going up the mountin I literally would see a 0.1 to 0.2L increase everyday when I go up the mountain. Hope that helps, feel free to ask other questions you have.
