Dealership Can't Program Smart Key for 2007 CX-9???

I have a 2007 CX-9 Grand Touring with the Smart Key. I recently lost one, and purchased a new one on ebay. My local dealer told me they could program it for $85. When I brought it to them, they told me it would not accept programming or it was the wrong model or damaged. They got the slide out key cut and programmed, and it works fine, but they could not program the smart card. I returned the smart card to the seller, and they shippped me a new one, which I took back to the dealer for programming (I had already paid the $85 and they told me they would program the replacement if I brought it back). They spent 1.5 hours messing with the keys and my car and finally told me that they could not get my car to accept another key card. They said that the car keeps recognizing the old key, so they wiped it clean and reprogrammed everything and still could only get the car to accept the original smart key. They even took a brand new smart key off of their parts shelf and it would not accept new programming. (Is it possible that the dealership does not know how to program these keys?)

They told me they have spent over 2 hours total on my car and only charged me $85, but they think something is wrong with the car (it won't accept a new key), and if I want them to try to program a second key further, they would have to start charging me labor and replacement parts until they determine what is wrong. They couldn't give me an estimate of what it would cost, and I didn't want to give them a blank check, so I left.

I now have one working smart card with the key insert, and two additional blade keys that are programmed and work, and one smart card that does not work. I have a feeling that the dealership was trying to program the card as if I had two working cards, but I don't know for sure. The service advisor was explaining all that they were doing, and it sounded like the steps described in other posts to program a third key. I only have one Mazda Dealer in town, so before I go to another town, to another Mazda dealer, I was hoping to get some advice from this forum. Thanks

Confirm with them if they used the M-MDS computer system or if they used the quick & dirty. I am sure they tried to use the M-MDS machine to program the second key. Likely your module is bad $$$$$$$ if it will not accept any other cards.
