Damn shift fork!

same s*** happened to me man but i broke two forks 2nd and 3rd cost me 1200.00$ to fix.

Uh 2nd AND 3rd don't have their own forks... there is a 1-2 fork and a 3-4 fork... and then a 5-R fork.

From talking with mazdaformance... the only things that have been "upgraded" in our trannies are the synchro rings and the 1-2 fork. I have seen the synchro rings which are supposedly "stronger" but appear to be the exact same as the ones already in there.. so no idea on that....

I have a set of new/extra forks for the car (the 1-2 and 3-4) and will take pictures of them and show them compared to the stock forks. The 1-2 fork is supposedly upgraded... and the one I have seems to look different from what I remembered the 1-2 fork looking like... so we'll see what happens when I get the tranny open and can compare them.

I'll be doign the trannyg 5/28-5/30 so look for pics (and probably a tranny LSD writeup) around then.

Later.

Hey Turf, there is a recent thread about the LSD failing in the mazdaspeed trannies due to some weak (small welds), have a look and see if you can strengthen it before putting it in.

I'll have to find that thread... I do have the latest most recent build of LSD... waited for it to come in from the manufacturer to Mazda to my dealer for about 5 weeks... or something... so it's a newest generation if they made any changes..

My point in saying that is i just inspected the LSD thoroughly.. and there are no welds on it... There are the 16 or whatever weld rivets that hold the ring gear on... but that's the only external joining of any sort. Looking internally everything looks good as well. I'll post some pics when I get a chance for you guys.

Later and thanks for the heads up!

Steve

oh umm I forgot completly about this like a couple months ago. let me see if I can round up that shift fork and take a pic.

actually it isn't the weld rivets. Apparently it is the body of the LSD seperating from the top portion that is welded on in a couple of spots. I'm likely going to have my welded all the way around to prevent that issue, especially with my racing and all the power I have.

Cool, be sure to take a picture when your done so that I know what you're talking about.
Thanks.

Here is the shift fork. And a pic of the Four turbo cars in my driveway.
Sorry for the size.

now that makes COMPLETE sense to me finally as to how people are breaking the tranny... and it also tells me that it is really the fault of the operator (sorry!). That "arm" is moved purely by the shift rod linkage to move the gears up and down... it sees no forces from the power of the engine or the like.. that is purely what force the operator puts on it through the shift linkage... so missing a shift, pushing too hard, or the like is the only thing that will break that. I have been inside the transmission and had it apart pretty well with my brother... and we messed around with those linkages a bit as well... but they move purely up and down riding on a collar to select gears...

If that is what everyone is breaking... then it's not the power that is doing it that's purely shifting and how well gears are meshed when you shift...

Which fork is it? 1-2, 3-4, or 5-R?
Nice job, thanks for posting.
Looks like the 3-4 fork to me based on what I remember and what I have out in the car. :)
