Damn shift fork!

that's a talon, NOT a protege

the eclispe/talon DSMs are KNOWN to have s*** AWD trannies that just love to blow up when you abuse it

Their trannies definitely aren't the strongest, but they go through a lot more abuse than about any other car. 1 tranny was killed because Quaife can't make a center diff that works with the tranny. The first was too much wheel spin / axle hop / torque steer that killed my stock diff. The 3rd tranny was left foot braking in a burnout, then going for the clutch to hit 2nd when all I did was mash the brake pedal again (that killed the shift fork).

But you're completely missing my point. That is, just because a driver caused it to break once, and "thinks" they know exactly what they did to cause it, doesn't mean they won't do it again. Ever since the first tranny, I've changed my launching technique, and the center diff has never failed due to my driving, and my 60's went from high 1.7x's to low 1.6x's too.

we don't need it because shifting fast does NOT EVER mean slamming the shifter into gear as fast as you can!

I know and understand that. I've never broken a fork in any transmission, even with the many t-5 stangs I've owned. I'm just saying that it would help those people that lack the skills.

I can threadjack my own thread, so. Mike R you got a SVO? My uncle is selling his and I was thinking about a new project.

I just touch-shift my s***. I know about where I need to shift, and I just apply a little pressure, and it just falls in. Even if I race! I feel blessed that my tranny is still operational after a year of Turbo use.

I got my broke shift fork and the other parts that where replaced. I just have to take a pic to show everyone.

Adam...I wish. It's a 87 coupe with a thunderbird turbo coupe drivetrain. Suspension is 93 Cobra. SVO's are badass, some of the more well known owners are dicks though.

My uncle is selling his SVO for 7 grand but he's put about 12k into it. I would love to have it.

Hey just go to mazda there has been an upgrade on the forks and get the new fork rings. my forks were just broken i got em fixed a week ago and found out about the new fork rings and had em put in.

the new rings are only 34 bucks. If your car is being worked on by a non mazda dealer like mine mazda tells them to get it or they wont warranty the parts. FUNNY HUH, how they wont warranty the forks without the new rings but they sure as hell produced a good 1500 with that crappy ass piece of s***. I pretty much had to do a complete tranny rebuild cost me $1456.50. I had to get every synchro, fork, slider, pretty much everything but the actaul transmission casing. Just make sure u let your mechanic or if its mazda know that u want the new fork rings.

Cool, so the rings wer $34, what about the new forks? I guess all forks were upgraded after 2002... How much were they?
I will be taking my tranny apart soon and want to make sure I address everything.

What are the part numbers?

the forks are the same just a bigger ring is what is really upgraded and im not sure about the part number just call ur nearest dealer and talk to the part department they should give you more detailed and correct information.

Dang, the part numbers for the forks are different from 2002 to 2003. So are you saying that it is actually the rings that are different? (they come with the forks, maybe?)

yes to my knowledge its rings are just bigger now. Well like i said if you go in for new fork or anything like that, mazda will make you get the new rings with the forks.
