CX-9 Trade In?

Ok, my wife and I are thinking about trading in our 2012 CX-9 Sport with 37k on the odometer for a 2014 CX-5. The reason is she does about 20,000 miles per year and the gas is killing us. We love all the room for traveling given toddler plus dog taking up space. Question is, how much cargo space am I giving up. I know a lot with 3rd row folded down, but in practicality does anyone struggle fitting strollers, plus toys, plus pack & plays, etc in the back for vacations?

Also, Im looking at the CX-5 Tourings and it looks like they are around $31k MSRP, so what can I expect to get below that given the 2015s are now out and maybe able to swap into a 2014? Hopefully will keep this breakeven (monthly pymt wise) with a ~20k trade in plus 10k left on loan, so $10k down brings it down to ~20k around what we paid for the CX-9.

The loss you take selling the CX9 so early will probably be offset many years of gasoline. My guess is it will take you 4-6 years to break even on the sales loss but, I suggest you do the calulation. Ed

Well, we paid around I think $26k for it (incl Extended warranty which we'll get back), if I can get $20k thats $6k in depreciation or $3k per year. If she drives 20k per year with gas around the $4/gallon level like it is here, that's $1,400 savings per year in gas vs CX-9, so roughly 4 years payback. The good part is part of the 1st year hit was getting the $32k car for $26k, which lowers the pain.

Pretty sure the 2014s are gone since 2015s have been out a while. FYI, I paid $24,999 for a 2014.5 Touring /w bose/moonroof option in February. That was $1700 below MSRP. Not sure where you are but seems the NE get hammered on pricing. Go to autotrader.Com and search your state for vehicle you want and find out who is offering MSRP discounts up front. Print best one out and take it to your local dealer and ask for price matching. Worked for me with zero haggling.

If you do find a 2014, make sure the date code on in the door jam is after 10/2013 so you get the improved chassis for offset crashes.

regarding the extended warranty - read the fine print. you'll get back much less than you think.

The fact is gas is not getting cheaper and CX-9 MPG is pretty horrendous actually.

I would change 16-18MPG to ~28+MPG any day.

I would go with the Nissan Pathfinder, if I would need more space.

On my Ford Mustang, I got back the pro-rated amount of my Extended Warranty...assumed it would be the same for Mazda.
