cx-9 keyless remote antenna replacement

Has anyone replaced the rear keyless antenna on their cx-9? I am unable to use my valet buttons and believe this is the problem.

Also what is the cost of the antenna?

Thanks!

If you are sure about the antenna being the problem, it is very easy to replace since it is external.
You can see it under the bumper. It is a elongated rectangular black box with wires connected to
it. Get the parts from internet, and DIY.

However, are you sure about it?
What "valet buttons" did you mean?

The rubber button on the door does not unlock my cx-9 any more (used to). But pressing the unlock/lock buttons on the remote does unlock and lock the vehicle. The KEY dash light is constantly on in red.

I read you the thread where someone had the same issue and it was the rear antenna and you speculated it required triangualtion to work.

Where can I purchase the antenna and how much would it cost?

Thanks so much for your help!

So are you saying that when you walk towards your vehicle and press the rubber unlock button under the liftgate handle, there is no response, but the buttons on the front doors respond? It may be the button, or it may be the sensor. One thing to check is the amount of dirt on that sensor under the bumper.

You may want to compare the cost of the button vs. the cost of the sensor, if the button is really cheap, you may want to try that first.

None of the rubber valet button work and the key diot light is always on. I assume one of the antenna is bad. How do I find the antenna unde the rear bumper? I have a factory installed hitch. Thanks

If none of the rubber buttons work anywhere on the car, then your issue is with your card, not the vehicle. If one proximity sensor goes out, only that area is affected. i.e. if the proximity under the bumper goes out, then the rubber button under the liftgate would be the only button that would not work.

It very likely is your card

I have two otherwise working cards that have the same issue of not unlocking/locking with any of the rubber valet buttons. This leads me to believe that it could be an antenna problem.

If none of the rubber buttons are working, and you are convinced there is nothing wrong with your fobs, then this is something the MMDS is gonna have to scan. (Mazda Modular Diagnostic System)

From other posts, it seems that if one of the sensor/antenna is bad, you can't lock/unlock from
any door/hatch. The system goes into error mode (red light flashing) and refuses to allow entry.
Now, the problem is you can't be sure which is bad. Only dealer can with their computer.
The rear one is most likely since it is exposed to weather elements.

Call a dealer and ask if there is any difference in part numbers between door antennas and the rear bumper antenna. If not, order an antenna and play easter egg to figure which it is. This will save in diagnostic work. The antennas are easy to replace as they just snap into the wiring with a clip and screw to the metal. I had a good idea which it was because I had broke the one off under the vehicle and had to epoxy it back on. It took three years to fail, but it did. BTW, just disconnecting the bad antenna will not reset the system, believe me I tried.

How does the plastic clip come apart? Screwdriver? I can not get it to come apart and cannot figure out how it disconnects.

I used a slim screwdriver. I had to mess with the plug, but there is a plastic tab clip that you have to trip before the male/female ends come apart.

Thanks I finally did get it apart. The dealer told me today that I need a new rear antenna. Where can I purchase it? Is this a dealer only purchase?

I'm searching for the rear antenna online. What is the Mazda part name? I'm having no luck finding it. Thanks

Tony,
Try waynemazda.com.
Their part department is very complete and has good prices.

I know for a fact that if the rear antenna only is bad, and the red KEY light is illuminated, then NONE of the external buttons work. That's how my 08 GT was. I replaced just the rear antenna under the bumper and all returned to normal. It was super easy to replace - two screws and one wire clip. It's right in the center of the bumper underneath. I don't remember the part number, but I ordered it from a Mazda dealer in Birmingham, Alabama. It was around $100.
