Wisconsin has the same laws about the 35% on the front windows being the darkest. I don't believe it's an offense that they can pull you over for. Just an add on if they get you for something else. Anyhow, before I did it I asked my cousin you is a cop and he said he tints all his windows to match and that most cops don't care but if you're a dick to them they'll write it into the ticket.
Exactly! We call it passing the asshole test. It can be the difference between "Please slow down and have the window tint lightened up some and have a nice day sir" or "sir, here is a ticket for doing 64 in a 55 as well as a ticket for illegal window tint".
One thing I always hear people say is "i like my tint, how much is the ticket. I would rather pay that and keep my tint." (I hear that all the time for just about every offence.)
They are thinking a $35 ticket is cheap. It is till you add in around $200 for court costs.
I will mention the last time I got pulled over was in a buddy's car about 6 years ago. He had a like 2008 Dodge charger with 22's and limo tint. Hey, it was his thing at the time. An unmarked Sheriff pulls up beside us going down the highway then back off and jumps behind us and hits the lights. He told my buddy he could write him a ticket for the tint or would overlook it and give him a chance to take it off if he could search the car. Short story is that was the only time another guy other than a doctor has ever checked out my package.
Point is, regardless of if your state says it is a secondary, tint along with other things might justify reasonable suspicion in the officers mind to investigate further.
Now that I'm the one that has to pull people over and approach a car with blacked out windows, I can see why officers have always been against dark tint. Really increases the stress factor on some nights.
Just saying, if you do go dark, it is a good idea to go ahead and lower your windows and maybe turn on the interior lights before the officer approaches. Might mean the difference in a ticket.
