crunching while braking

When I am going slightly uphill or downhill I will hear a weird crunching from the front of the car and get feedback throught the brake pedal and this is under normal braking but does not happen all the time, just slowing from relatively slow speeds. Like today I was going down a hill towards a light out of a shopping center and as am almost stopped at the bottom of the hill I hear this crunching/grinding sound and the brake pedal starts like pulsating, but I was not braking hard. The other time this week it happened was taking a right turn into a parking lot and just going up the little ramp that changes the incline, I had to stop and got the crunching sound again with the same feeling in the pedal. My car only has 1800 miles on it.

This is different from the braking problem but in first gear if I nail it, it will climb up to 6000 rpm hang for a sec and then jump up to close to 6400 rpm in like a split sec. I am flashed, so I was wondering if this is another hesitation or just a stumble?

Its the pringles in your brakes, but now you can't stop

oh I kill myself

If it is the same crunching as I get I think it is the Limited Slip Differential. I notice it if I am going over something that is really uneven and I am coasting and turning at the same time with my foot on the clutch. I think it is because one wheel is rotating at a different rate than the other. I get the same thing if I hit the brakes heavy especially if it is wet out. Those parkinglot ramp things or whatever is where I noticed it at first it does not seem right at all but so far nothing has broken or slipped so it must be normal

thats what I am experiencing.

I would not think it was abs because i am not braking very hard.

i wouldn't think so either but you never know....that's what it sounds like at least. might wanna have it checked out if it keeps happening. i haven't heard any crunching from my car, just clunking.

maybe it's the abs kicking in for some reason? just a guess.

I thought the MSP didn't have ABS? or Cruise Control? or Side Air Bags?

( or the completely useless bad little foglights my ES is blessed with )

59 payments left till I can get something else....

I get the grinding noise at slow speeds as well, and I know someone else (from the Oct 25 meet) gets it too. Unfortunately, I can't get the problem to replicate when I'm at the service shop, so "there's nothing wrong with the brakes" according to them. They have checked the brakes three times already, too, so I know they're not just saying that. I just hope that it doesn't lead to brake failure later down the road. If it does, though, it's documented that I've been in the service center a few times about it already.

I get that same noise you described! When i pull out of my garage on the little incline. My friend was in the car and he heard it as well. It always happens at the same part of the driveway. I also feel it in the pedal (big time) like it is grinding.

Or maybe when you push the peddle in slightly, the pads are on the verge of grabbing and not grabbing and making a rubbing/vibrating sound? When I'm in my parents sebring and am stopped and let go of the peddle slightly the pads will rub but not completely grab, and will pulsate through the peddle. I don't exactly know what your feeling but this could be it. I can't do this in my speed though. I don't know what speed it happens at either, but it usually happens for me on other cars at a very low speed.

Yeah but it is not a nice feeling it is a bad feeling, feels kinda crazy and scares me like wtf is wrong with my car.

For the others that I have reported it, I guess I will report it also when I take it in for service and that way it will be documented.

Find a spot near the dealership that you can replicate in and have a tech. drive with you so you can show him/her.

i get the crunching too...freaked me out the first time. it happened when i took off the ebrake. definately not the abs 'cause y would it come on when i'm barely moving on a flat surface ? blah...it's kinda weird it freaks me out

i have the same problem with my car. go over the same spot that is giving you the problem, and instead of having the clutch in put it in nuetral and hit only the brake and leave your foot off the clutch, and stop the exact same way. everytime i do that it never makes that sound, but i still dont know whats causing it.

Happened a couple times under hard, fast braking for me. NOT fun especially when you needed to have total control of braking at that time. With the pedal shaking and everything its hella scary.

Most likely rust if sitting overnite in the rain or its the super-sensitive ABS with EBD. The slightest jerk or bump will set it off (momentarily). Just turn into a driveway with the brakes on lightly (it helps when you have to go up or down). Mine used to do it weekly!

SUPMAN: That is total control. Just practice with it! It WILL keep you under control in a heavy turn. It pulses much faster than almost any human!

Mine does this too....when go slowly and stopping fast usually in a turn...like pulling in a parking lot and some idiot pulls in front of you

I guess it could be the ABS. I thought it did it other times when the brakes werent on and I felt it through the clutch but I really don't remember I haven't tried to duplicate it since it does not feel healthy. Whatever.

Unrelated - THe Joe P MBC is out of stock on Boostcontroller.com and I already placed the order. There goes my plans for the weekend.
