crunching while braking

Most likely rust if sitting overnite in the rain or its the super-sensitive ABS with EBD. The slightest jerk or bump will set it off (momentarily). Just turn into a driveway with the brakes on lightly (it helps when you have to go up or down). Mine used to do it weekly!

SUPMAN: That is total control. Just practice with it! It WILL keep you under control in a heavy turn. It pulses much faster than almost any human!

gotta be supersensitive abs because when I happens it was not raining and I had already been driving for at least 10 min.

If it is the same crunching as I get I think it is the Limited Slip Differential. I notice it if I am going over something that is really uneven and I am coasting and turning at the same time with my foot on the clutch. I think it is because one wheel is rotating at a different rate than the other. I get the same thing if I hit the brakes heavy especially if it is wet out. Those parkinglot ramp things or whatever is where I noticed it at first it does not seem right at all but so far nothing has broken or slipped so it must be normal

Actually an LSD keeps both tires spinning at the same speed.

oh my god, thts a horrible!!

It could be the combination of the Limited Slip and the ABS. I know for a fact that the ABS sucked in my ES. One thing you could try is take out the ABS fuse and drive it and see if the problem goes away. Then you will know for sure. One note...it will make the ABS light on your dash come on.

I know that is what it does but if the wheels are being forced to turn at different speeds it may cause the god awful noise and sound I hear. I don't know it was just my thought on it. I am going to screw with it this weekend. My girlfriends going away so I will be installing my MBC and stuff anyway.;)

03MSP good color choice on the blue by the way;)

supman...ABS is what you feel in the pedal from hard, higher speed braking...my experience is slow (like 5mph slow) and it's definitely not vibration, it's like a metal on metal sound.

Pmpkinhead....not from rust either, it happens after a 30 mile drive home from work

oliver2000...that may be ABS too...it'll still come on at slow speeds, like you describe. It's trying to prevent your tires from locking on you.

Try this test to experience ABS...in a open parking lot wet w/ rain, try accelerating up to say 30, then stomp on your brake HARD...this is ABS. It'll also kick in if you try to power slide w/ your ebrake...NOT RECOMMENDED!!

The Grinding/crunching that I experience (& I know others) is the sound of taking a rasp or file & running it across some rough metal.

Hopefully this gives you guys an idea of what it is that your experiencing & the grinding noise is.

I have a very dull grinding from somewhere in the front wheel area at low speeds, braking or not. Very slight, but I can feel it in the brake pedal and a bit in the steering wheel. The dealer didn't know what it was, and said my brake pads had plenty of life left.

Definitely not ABS. I do get that kicking in on wet roads, and it's a completely different sensation. The ABS is more coarse and vibratey. What I feel all the time at low speeds (like from 1mph - maybe 6 or 7 mph) is just a very dull grinding. I'm kinda glad more people are describing the same thing, so that maybe I didn't screw my car up after all ;)

I have been having the same crunching sounds, but mine seems to happen when it is cool in the morning and when i hit a bump in the road. It sounds like the suspension is tearing loose. It seems to go away when the car warms up.

thats a different sound made by the front suspension. The sound I am talking about is when braking, but I also get the sound from the suspension in the morning backing down my driveway.

I had the same think, only when I had the spare tire on (driver rear) and it only happened a few times, couple times when turning into a parking spot the other was going about 30 mph and hit the brakes.
Never could find a pattern to it, and if I let off the brakes and hit them again it was fine. Also hasn't done it since I got my spare off.

Interesting......

Ironically I got a flat yesterday and put the donut on my passenger rear. After my drive home I was pulling into a parking spot at Home Depot and heard the crunching and felt the pedal pulsate. It sounded like it was coming from the passenger front area of the car. Happened also this morning. I wonder if it has anything to do with the donut. anyone else have this happen when the donut was on?

Getting my tire replaced tonight so hopefully that takes care of the problem.

On a side night, I'm also signing up for the road hazard plan tonight. Our tires are sooooo expensive - $250 mounted and balanced. If I would have paid the one time fee of $266 I would have almost made that money back.

Live and learn.

exactly!!! i get the same damn thing!!! All this time i was freaking out. Its def. not abs. I get it when i turn into this particular spot where its slightly elevated drive way. I jus gently press the brakes and it happens. THe best way i can describe is that it feels like there are rocks getting caught and gridning. def not the grinding in the tranny.

since you can get it to reoccur maybe try and get a dealer tech to come out to the spot with you so you can show them the prob and see what they say about it.

Seriously, I was gonna take mine in but i could never get it to repeat, and it stopped after i got my spare off.

I don't think it's warped rotors, no shaking while braking, it just feels like rocks or something is between the pads and rotors.

That's a pretty good description, I get the same thing.

And it's all the time, at low speeds. And not just turning backwards uphill with a spare, either . . .

I can be accelerating, coasting, or braking.

well...since the past few days it has been raining, i tried do a lil' drift action. after pulling the ebrake the brakes crunch. something related. couldn't be the rotors.

You guys, it's the ABS....hmmm, the pedal pulsates rapidly it's ABS. Mine went one just from baking out of a slanted driveway...I guess they are just really sensitive.

it couldn't be the ABS because my car WASN'T slowing down while i tried to press the brakes. it just makes a crunching noise for a short travel, then goes back to normal.. scares the s*** out of me. i used the ebrake in the miata, and it did it too but it was a small mechanical-feeling single pulse. not like a rapid ABS pulsing.
