Cracked CF Hood

I've got a cracked CF hood that I want to paint the same as my MSP (black). I'm looking at paintscratch.com and it basically has everything I need, but what should I do with my cracks? Add some putty in it and sand and paint? Or should I just sand primer and paint? Also if you guys know any other good retailers please share, Thanks!

bump! Also, can anyone tell me where to get the mazdaspeed decals? When I paint my hood, I'd like a cf "mazdaspeed" sign in the corner

the way i understand is that if its cracking putty will not fix it. i think you have to grind it down and fiberglass it. then use filler to make it straight. its similar to fixing fiberglass i think.

I would like to have the carbon fiber look though. Do you guys know if I can just wet sand the hood and give it a fresh clear coat? Will this restore the hood to its original carbon fiber luster?

It is just as faded (if not more) than the hood in post 6.

Thanks ThrillRide, the pictures zumzumzoom provided is the hood I have. If you look on the edges of the vents, you will see a ton of cracks.

Not a prob crashkelly, I also WANT to keep the cf look, but I already think its too crapped.

mine didn't any cracks in mine when i got it, but the gel coat was fading and i just sanded it down 400grit because the eurbuni hood hand a lot of gel coat, and then just reclear coated.

Well that definitely looks like gel coat going bad. So you just want to paint it and not see the weave? Just a matching black paint right? Sand it and paint it. Ok maybe a little more complicated than that lol. But pretty much you need to sand down the gel coat and prime it and paint it. If you are doing it yourself I would talk to a pro first.

If you want to keep the CF look just sand down the gel-coat and clear coat it yourself.

Yeh I'm just gonna give up the weave...I'll sand and prime and paint. I do however want a cf "mazdaspeed" sign on the hood. I already bought a decal on eBay and I'm still thinking how I'm going to accomplish this. Here's what I'm thinking:

1. Sand whole hood down
2. Clear coat the corner where decal will go
3. Put decal on
4. Prime hood
5. Paint basecoat
6. Carefully remove decal...
7. Sand decal area to get as smooth as possible....
8. Clear coat whole hood

What do you guys think about that?

just wet sand it down then stick the sticker on. prime it, wet prime paint it, wait till the paints just past tacky, and then pull the sticker, and then clear coat it, then next day wet sand it again and buff till prefection.

I dont think you can do a wet sand on the primer when your doing the sticker because of the layer diffrences.

if your hood is flexable you need to add that to the paints (3)

Ahh I see. Thanks for the advice man! So:

1. Wet sand whole hood down
2. Put decal on
3. Prime hood
4. Paint hood with basecoat
5. Pull decal when tacky wet
6. Let hood dry
7. Clear coat whole hood
8. Use rubbing compound to finish off

When you say "wet prime and paint," do you mean paint with basecoat even before primer is dry and pull decal when both primer and basecoat are wet? Thanks again for your help!

3) prime
4) wait till tacky
5) base coat
6) wait till just pasted tacky (2-4hours depends on how thick and temp and humity, etc...)
7) remove sticker - clean with tacky cloth
8) clear
9) wait a day (or so depends on how clear crazy you go) and then start your wet sanding up through buffing compounds
10) wait three months to have first wax and then enjoy

wet prime is just that. base coat when the primer is tacky so the base coat adhers to the primer. its alllllll about the prep.
