Cost vs. Power: N/A Built Motor

Why am I not suprised that you're one of the only other people that knows this Jamie? A turbocharger is literally a "turbine driven supercharger", contracted to turbo-charger.

Run a 7 PSI turbo setup. It will be $3000.00 or less and will get you much more in HP than any NA build for double the cost that you can come up with...

How is a supercharger any different than a turbo when adding it to an N/A build? Both raise cyl pressure and intake temps...that is the nature of FI.

Super Charger...
Driven By The Motor, Does not require a ton of pipes, is easier to tune...

Turbo Charger...
More Expensive, Better Gains, Harder to install, the system weighs more than a SC...

It is ture Josh... You know it...

Ok fine then. I'm going to go into the FI section and tell everyone that for 3 times the cost, they can get half the horsepower if they stay NA.

....oh, wait a minute. D'OH! (scratch)

Everyone's probably going to pass me in the performance department this summer. My girlfriend and I are getting a place together this summer, and there'll be the requisite furniture and renovations going on. She doesn't have a car right now though so she'll be getting the 1990 GT.

It's all good, I'll still try and keep everyone competitive. 3 for sure mods are the custom header, exhaust cut-out and drag tires(and some new Azenis for AutoX).......

I think once Scorch gets his setup finished, he'll be the benchmark for the NA Protege crowd though...you know what engine management you're going with yet David?

Thanks for the vote of confidence josh. I wish I felt that way. Right now my build looks a millions dollars and a hundred years from being completed. :) Not sure what engine management I am going to end up with. I would prefer the AEM from MAM, but I havent heard anything about it lately. If not that, then the Microtech from Turfburn. I honestly have no idea what kind of numbers I will end up with when I am done. I told Paeco I wanted 200 crank hp, but Im not sure if I am going exotic enough to get there. Regardless, I am thinking more and more that nitrous is in my future. 170 whp + 100 shot should be pretty impressive, huh? The engine I am building should be able to take the abuse, hopefully.

Come on David...spend the money on IRTBs instead of Nitrous. You'll have one of the most powerful Proteges AND the best sounding!

You'll easily gross 200 crank...Paeco headwork is your trump card....

Is there anyone making these, or would I have to go custom Josh? What is the benefit of IRTBs? Guess I need to read up on them.

Don't listen to josh. Ever. Go spray or go boost. Don't do N/A. It's a lot of money and is not worth it at all.

Scorch, how's your build coming. I remember speaking with you about it a few times. Like I told you on the phone. Paeco is only about 20 minutes from my house. I've spoken with them a few times about having work done but decided against it since they never give you a set time frame of when the work will be complete. If for some reason you need to get in touch with Paeco and can't let me know and I'll see if I can help.

p.s. as for the design difference of cams for NA engines and turbo engines there are HUGE differences. Stock cams seem to do well on simple low-boost turbo kits but having a set of custom ground cams designed specifically to optimize turbo spool-up is a HUGE gain. Trying to argue this fact will make anyone look stupid. Maybe you guys should ask Wagner. He's the only person in the protege community even working on cams for our cars. He's working on two sets...NA and turbo...maybe there is a difference afterall.

Step one - buy 20 model rocket engines.
Step two - bolt them onto the side of the car.
Step three - kick the tires and light the fires.

JATO 4 life!

Seriously though you should consider going FI if you are on a budget and interested in time/dyno slips. Start out low and upgrade if you'd like as you go. Everyone else has already made great points for all types of build. Remember it's up to you to figure out which application will fit your needs the best.

Build is going good Matt. Yeah, Paeco arent the fastest turnaround in the world - but that is sort of working out good for me. It allows me to save up money between the start of a job and the finish. Carl is letting me pay half the price up front, then half when completed. So my bank account doesnt take 3 grand hits all at once. He is working on the short block right now. I expect it to be done in about 2 months. Then it will be bolt it in time and see what happens. Hopefully no boom. :) I'll keep everyone posted.

Thanks,

wow....just curious though but how much are they charging you for the shortblock?? I know Wagner is selling built shortblocks for $2300+shipping. I'm pretty sure he could have it built and shipped LONG before Paeco. They are both going to use the same parts I'd bet. Just something to think about. I'd love to see how everything turns out for you. Sounds like you'll have a great ride!

The FS is a terrible engine (there, I said it) and the only way to make power is FI.

THERE, I SAID IT PEOPLE.

what the hell is going on in here?...I don't even know where to begin...First of all...calm the **** down...Next we look like a bunch of girls...

I will start the comments based on a page ago...
