Hi all, After my daughter totalled her 02 Protege while plowing into a community wall, I have been frantically trying to find a replacement for less money than the insurance settlement. That car was amazingly reliable for the 3 years of ownership. After looking at 3 overpriced high mileage dealer cars, I have found a 99 Protege DX with 70,000 miles in amazingly clean original condition. However, after having it on the lift it seems to be leaking oil from the crankshaft or camshaft seal. The repair shop needs to replace the timing belt, water pump, both engine seals, all the belts and gaskets. What do you guys think would be a fair price. The shop quoted me $705 with tax. This was not a Mazda dealer. The seller will be doing all the repairs. Does this sound like a fair price?

Does that price include labor as well?

Yes. It includes labor and tax and all parts which are timing belt, cam and crankshaft seals, valve cover gasket, timing belt, water pump, and all the belts including p/s, alternator, and A/C. By the way, is there anything else I should know about with regards to a 99 1.6? It has as much zip as the 2.0, the trans shifts crisply , no drifting, stops straight, ice cold air, new tires and no unusual sounds from engine or trans or axles. The 02 was a workhorse that was abused by my daughter and never let her down. I'm hoping this 99 could be the same as it is very orginal and well maintained. The price seems a little high at around $4,000, but it's really hard to find anything decent with fair miles here in Florida other than high priced dealer cars. I am not paying for the repairs. The seller is. What do you guys think?

Well I don't think the price of the car is too high for starters, I got my 2000 LX for 5,300 and only a few less miles.

As far as the engine, I also have a 1.6L and it does fine. The only issue I have is that my alternator is too small to support my 700 watt amp and the AC at the same time. But I doubt your daughter will have anything taking up nearly as much power as my subs.

I would say the 705 sounds about right, but honestly I've never dealt with any of those issues before personally.

Hope I helped.

we had an owner with a 99 protege (very sharp by the way, if he sees this) in the shop today and his 1.6 had 190,000 miles on it and ran like a new car. i'd say its a good engine.
