copper head gasket

alright not really doing with the mp3, but I'm helping a friend rebuild his b series motor (it's been awhile since I worked on these so I'm a bit rusty). We installed a set of b16b pistons before and he's been using two oe head gaskets (one on top of the other) so that we have enough piston/valve clearance. ...Big problem is that a setup like that is weaker than 1 head gasket so he's blown it three times now.....I mentioned to him copper head gaskets (Mr.Gasket makes one the right thickness). Now he told me that (he thinks) you have to o-ring the block to use copper head gaskets?? I was under the impression that once you've o-ringed your block, that you don't use a head gasket anymore (at last I really hope I'm right on this one......if not I have to track down another friend and tell him to stop driving around his eclipse....I helped him redo the head on that one and guess what kind of gasket we used (doh) so if any of you fi guys can help out it'd be much appreciated.

No, the best gaskets to use are the copper ones that have the wire "o-ring" in them. It adds that extra barrier of strength. They kinda bite into the block and give it a very tight seal.

Every copper gasket that I have ever used you have to oring the block or head. The proper way to do it would be to also cut a reciever groove on the opposite side of the oring so the gasket seals on both sides (the oring sticks out a couple thou and pushes the copper in to the groove on the other side). Many people just oring and use the special sealant for copper.

I would like to see a copper gasket with an oring in it(I didn't know such a thing existed). That defeats the purpose of using a copper gasket.

I personally would buy one of the off the shelf steel gaskets that are very available for hondas, I think there are even stackable gaskets available for that engine.
