Considering new radiator.

My advice to anyone with a turbo kit...get a slim fan for the passenger side. If not, you won't be able to get the fan out of the car without taking the radiator out!

hmmm..... My turbo outlet pipes are already really close to the fan on the passenger side, I wonder if they will still fit with this rad.

Was your cap a stock cap? Kind of a surprise that it doesn't fit. I guess I should check mine before installing it.

Ok, yall are never gonna beleive this s***, but the radiator cap that fits on the automatic Proteges worked! :wtf: Moeed got it from Pirana, and dropped it by. Thanks all, now to fix my overflow nipple problem tomorrow.

Nope, it was the Mazdaspeed 1.3 BAR cap for the Manual transaxle Proteges. Not sure why the caps are different for the automatic Proteges. I now have the Mazdaspeed 1.3 BAR cap for the automatic Proteges. You can distinguish between the caps by color. The 1.3 BAR Mazdaspeed cap for the Manuals is Green. The automatic cap is Pink.

Hey Patrick....I just got home and found your message. Dude I did THE SAME THING when installing the overflow niple on the neck....soft aluminum sucks. Did you get the old peice out yet? I cannot find your number so email it to me nolanspawn@comcast.net

After talking to a source of mine, I found out that the reason for this is that they used the Calsonic cap fitting on this radiator. They need to use the Denso cap fitting for the manuals. I need to inform Anthony of this in the A.M.

Yep. 1.1 BAR = 16 PSI (15.9 PSI)
Gald I ahevn't orderer my cap yet.

So I need the auto tranny cap?

And I think I will wait and get a slim line fan then too. We couldn't mount the dang gauge Wednesday 'cause we ran out of time, but we tested it an know it works at least.

Big time difference in the thickness of the radiator!!

Well about what cap you get, it depends on what fitting they used for yours. Denso or Calsonic? Go test your radiator cap asap, and then you will know.

Oh yeah huh...Man I need sleep.

Hey, you do know that Tony is going to have a slim-line deal at the Protege Fest?? It'll be the proto-type version, but I think he'll have them started for sale after that.

I think I might hold out until then to get it, and put both in.

Radiator install finished! Damn, that was nerve-racking. Now all you who go forward with the install should know what to expect! I had to drill the whole out with a 11/32 drill bit, and then instead of looking for a 1/16 NPT Die and Tap, I found a more readily available 1/8 NPT Tap. I tapped the hole to thread it, and then installed a brass fitting there. Please know that you should not install brass in the same system as the aluminum radiator unless you ad a ground strap to the radiator like I did! The electro-chemical reaction reaks havoc on the radiator over time. The ground strap fixes that. Anthony at AWR is sending me a not-standard sized 1/8 NPT nipple for my overflow to replace the brass fitting.

Okay, so the stock Mazdaspeed radiator cap doesn't fit on my AWR radiator either.

I have an appointment for Thursday to have everything installed (decided to have a shop do the radiator and exhaust at the same time, since taking the radiator out helps with the exhaust install but you still gotta have the right tools)

Where do I go to get a radiator cap, to me here in california by Wednesday of next week. Might as well get the 1.3 bar cap as long as I need to buy a new one.

Update.

I just talked to CorkSport and a Pink Mazdaspeed 1.3 Bar cap is shipping out to me on Monday. If this isn't the right cap I need to know so I can cancel the order and still get something that will arrive by Wednesday of next week.

Thanks!

Jared

You need to test-fit your stock cap. If it doesn't fit, then you know you need the other one. It will depend on what style neck was welded to the radiator. Denso for the manuals, and Calsonic for the autos.

yup, that's what I did, I test fit my stock cap off of my stock MSP radiator and it's a no go. So I guess I have the right one coming to me from Corksport.

Thank God for this thread, because otherwise I would have gotten everything in and then realized I didn't have a cap that fit my radiator. DOH!

Well the results are in. This radiator the ******* s***! Peep this out here:

Tonight, the temp outside was 74 F, and while driving into work, my coolant temps were around 180 when I 1st started driving. About 30 miles later, I started noticing that my coolant temps were around 190-194. This was at night. If my coolant temps are that high now, just imagine when summer hits. (nervous)
Well, just know that at the same temperatures with the AWR Radiator, the temps were from 167-176 while cruising at the same speeds! That's like 20 degrees cooler!
