Considering new radiator.

So they are the same thickness as the stockers, but just wider?
The end caps are close to the same thickness, but the core of the AWR is much thicker. There are pics in this thread somewhere posted by LinuxRacr.

What he said.

The core is Definetly thicker but the end caps are the same thickness.

The MSP radiator is also different from the regular Protege radiator. Keep that in mind as well.

Ok, The CORE on the AWR is thicker then the CORE on the MSP radiator, but I didn't measure it.

The Cap tanks on the top measure as follows:

AWR - Approx 27" left to right and 2" front to rear
MSP (radiator only) - Approx 21 1/2" left to right and Top caps also measure 2" front to rear.
awesome. maybe the MS FMIC will fit with the AWR unit afterall. thanks again

Jrodhotrod,

How much did the fans you got from Summit Racing cost you, and how do they compare to stock?

These are the fans I got: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=PRM%2D19010

They are 79.95 each.

I believe they are more efficient then the stock fans because they come on less often and run shorter. I don't have a water temp gauge so I can't make real observations. But they work really well for me. Leaves plenty of room for my ION FMIC piping coming out of the turbo. I don't know what the CFM rating is on the stock fans, but I gotta believe that 1250 CFM (the rating for these fans) is better.

I'm going to call Tony and see how close he is to selling a radiator/fan package...I'd rather avoid the hastle of trying to force fitment.

I talked to Tony about a custom slimline package that he was working, but the cost was really prohibitive. If I remember right we are talking three times the cost of just purchasing the fans from Summit Racing and doing it myself.

Putting these fans in is not a big deal, especially if you attach them before you put the radiator in, really is easy.

how did you hook up the wiring for the new fans??? is that link above for our protege's in particular or just random fans??? i see that they offer different sensors you can buy to change the temp when the fans come on...did you happen to do this??? i am very interested and will probably buy a new radiator, msp thermostat, radiator cap, and slimline fans...anything else that i may need, or am i overdoing it?

For the fans, I just cut the plastic connectors off of the stock fans and spliced the wires into the new fans. They are a universal piece so you'll have to work with them a bit to mount them using their brackets and what not, it's not very difficult.

I haven't touched the thermostat or any controls of when the fans come on and off.

Damn, the price is right on the PWR Radiator, and it is twice as thick as stock!
Doesn't the PWR only fit the Protege 5 though? I emailed them about this, but the P5 radiator is wider than the MSP radiator, since we have the intercooler mounted next to it. I know your car is an MP3, but don't you have the turbo and whatnot on there? I have a neighbor who knows the owners of Fluidyne. He just put their radiator on both his GS-R with a Jackson Racing (no longer their name, his friend bought the company) Supercharger, and his project CRX. I would really like their radiator if they can make one to fit. If it turns out PWR makes one that fits, that price was sweet, and I like the looks of it. Let me know if anyone finds one that fits the MSP. I will do the same. Thanks!

The PWR Radiator will fit in the Mazdaspeed, just like a protege5. You will have to buy new mounting brackets for the top, and be running an ION FMIC or a custom set-up that doesn't route the piping through where the stock intercooler sits. At present, this is the only way to upgrade the Mazdaspeed radiator as nobody makes an upgraded radiator designed to drop in where the stock one does and leave the IC in place.

Actually, that is not true. Look up a few threads, there is a link to an AWR radiator. Ahh, screw it, I am being lazy...here it is:

http://www.awrracing.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=12_2_20&products_id=12

Read the description, this one fits the MSP with a side mount intercooler or oil cooler. It would be sweet to use this with an upgraded SMIC, then it would be cheaper and the morons at Mazda may not even notice. They may just think I had them polished. I could do a full FMIC, but that is out of my price range right now. You are saying that if I do a FMIC, then I can do a P5 radiator like the PWR or Fluidyne? That would be sweet. We will have to figure this one out. Thanks for that hint!

That one "will" fit, but nobody has tried it. The problem with it is the thick core causes clearance problems with the piping. It said Mazdaspeed on it a long time before the mazdaspeed came out. But nobody has tried it to my knowledge so the best bet would be to call Tony at AWR and get your answers directly.

It may involve some custom bracketry and not be direct plug and play with the mazdaspeed set-up.

Yes, If you do an FMIC you can go to a P5 style radiator. HOWEVER The only FMIC on the market right now that I am aware of that will let you do this is the ION FMIC (I have it, and an AWR High Performance Radiator) and some custom one off set-ups. The others that I am aware of all run the FMIC piping through the stock SMIC mounting location.
