Common Sense

If you believed everything you read you would think that this car was a Yugo with a turbo.

Please use common sense when it comes to modifying your cars. If you choose replace your DP or change your intake or WG or tune make sure you understand the implications.

If you are going to modify start by getting one step colder plugs. If you use a specific cobb OTS map then do not under any circumstance use any different mechanical part than was tested with the map. For instance if it is a Cobb Stage 1 91 octane with MSCAI2, use the one step colder plug with the MSCAI (with air straightener) and at least 91 octance fuel. Do not ask if you can use a nano or a test pipe or anything else.

Wasn't that easy? Now there have been some cases that a part (cobb sri comes to mind) where this still seem to be causing problems but I think these are very rare. I would also not use any other intake (beside the MSCAI2) without a tune to match. The MSCAI2 was tested for the application with the stock tune.

I owned a Subaru Forester XT before this and engine problems did happen but not to this extent. HOWEVER, people were not throwing on test pipes or whatever without getting a map to match. Many of those people had a pro tunes.

So please if you blow up your car or have funky AF or EGT or knock or whatever and you have done any of the above you and only you are to blame.

OK let the flaming commence

i wholeheartedly agree.

I fail to understand why people get fussy when they have warranty problems. Your changing the car from the OE spec, why should mazda have to cover anything that goes wrong with a car manufactured and engineered a certain way.

Or why are you surprised when s*** goes wrong? there isnt a modded car on this planet that doesnt have some sort of issues.

+100 there are reeders and there are bilders i guess u know whos who when the start talking smak aout the ms3

Wouldn't common sense mean leaving the engine (and other parts) alone and in it's original factory settings and equipment?

the point of this thred is that if ur going to mod ur car do it the right way (1)do ur homwork (2)know ur parts dont just buy something of ebay and expected to work like a cobb product u get what u pay for (3) if the car fails its not the cars falt is the bowner for doing thins there no ment to do

With things like the AP, common things can mix and match. Like a SRI is pretty much a SRI and an FMIC is pretty much a FMIC. The only things that are iffy are a NON-Catted DP as the MAPS are all created for a Catted DP and the Injen CAI as it is known to have issue but there is a fix Christian can do.

However, I do agree that Common Sense is in short supply on this and pretty much every other forum out there.

LMAO... You complain because you are tired of people complaining? Hmm.... This will never go away so get used to it. Just keep your own sanity by knowing the truth and reminding yourself daily what that truth is. We all know that the same truths are out there about every car on the planet. We just now have a better way of getting a larger audience together to hear and complain about it...

Not true. Cp-e sri has been showing very different fuel trims compared to the cobb sri.

Im not sure what this thread is aimed at. To people who blow their engines or to people having problems with the cobb ap. Its easy to point fingers and get annoyed but at the same time its a different story when its your engine that blows. I have no problem and I sympathize with people who have issues and have their warranties voided because of intakes and bpv's. On the other hand if your fully bolted on running a tune and you blow your engine than it is your fault and mazda shouldn't have to help.

Sorry dude I have to ask since you made me read this phrase three times in the course of this thread.

Do you mean "readers" and "builders"?

Not sure if it's some play on words and I'm the retard, or if you just can't spell.

BTW, totally agree with OP (lol2)

+1

thats what I did and my car runs fantastic, not the fastest MS3 in the world. But quicker than 95% of the cars I see while driving. Full Cobb MS3 FTW

Basically there are 2 types of peeps on these forums. Those who truly enjoy tuning their cars and those who are afraid of warranty issues and possibly having to fight it out with Mazda. Whichever you are just enjoy your car and have fun with it whatever you do... (enguard)

Useless thread...much like my post.
I guess sometimes we can't keep our opinions to ourselves.

This type of thing always happens when a performance car is relatively new. There hasnt been enough time to R&D parts, tunes etc for it to become a no brainer for would-be modders. Granted, IMO there is quite a bit of information available if people just look for it.

Frito, I too came from Subaru where, since 2001 (usmy2002) and since the early nineties in Japan, Europe and Australia the formula ha sbeen basically the same for each of the turbo models. Those years of product development have yielded a wealth of information and aftermarket support for anyone with a turbo Subaru. There is so much support that it is easy to mod and tune a car like that.

The MS3, as far as I know strated in 2007 in the U.S., not sure when the JDM models came out (06?) Thats not that much time to allow for enough R&D to be completed by enough companies to make it a simple enough * choice for most.

The other issue that I dpont like to admit is that the demographic that purchases the MS3 is unique. With the MS3 offering so much performance for the money the door is open for first time drivers and a much younger crowd than those who buy Subarus, Evos among others. The whole ease of availability plays a major role in all the stupid stories you hear on the forums. Is it surprising that Johnny highschooler who's parents bought him a brand new MS3 complains that his motor is making funny sounds after he installs his MBC wrong and overboosts to the point of catastrophic detonation? Chalk it up to ingorance. Its unfortnately just what we have to deal with buying and being involved with a car like the MS3.

Back in my Subie days, I dont remember hearing about the same things I've read about here with the MS3. That goes back to what I said previously.

Bottom line if it bothers you that much, either A. stay off the forums or just ignore the idiots trolling about or B. trade in the MS3 for an STI or Evo and the number of spoiled teenagers blowing up their cars and complaining about it on the forums will drastically decrease.

I'm done.

The older and wiser buyer or the more automotive educated is certainly less likely to grenade one of these cars than somebody knowing nothing about how turbo's work, engines work, or much else about what endangers an internal combustion engine. You can read all the posts on forums you want, and take all the advice from others they are willing to give you, but without base knowledge behind it, you're risking a lot of expensive parts. The negative impact on this car's reputation is unfortunate, but this is the world we live in - online videos and negative information hit the web pretty fast.

I read a lot of this information before test driving this car, and it didn't stop me from buying it. I took it into consideration but kept the perspective that people will blow up any modified car no matter how strong they make the parts and some problems are bound to happen purely out of statistical odds.

I think my MS3 is the most awesome thing I've driven and I absolutely love driving it. I won't blow it up and I may not mod it for a couple years because I pretty much like it the way it is, but I am already making plans to scratch that itch. My dad likes it so much he might buy one for himself and he's 68!

+1, I too feel its the most fun car I have driven and owned (past cars include 2 WRX's, a Forester XT, GTI and an Eclipse GSX).

Your exactly right, the knowledge base is key.

Scratch that itch, you wont regret it. I had the same mindstate when I first baought the car. I was so happy with it out of the box that I thought there wasnt a need to do anything to it. Now that I have I'm hooked even more into the car. Its definitely a keeper!
