cluster swap

ok i have the chance to swap basically anything i want from a 99 es to my 99 dx i already did the wheels, im doing the seats, can i do a cluster swap so i can have a tach? how hard would it be? my car is standard and this car is auto if that makes any difference

The cluster should swap no prob... but You will have to run a tach wire yourself.... I did and it works just fine. Do a search for the tach wire location... I think it's a purple/black wire inside the engine bay, near the drivers side and windshield.

Hey, can I get in on the action? I could use the front calipers really bad!

Your car may already have the purple/white tach wire. I have a DX and the ES cluster swapped straight in. Be careful though cause if your car is manufactured before I think 06/99, then the cars made after that dates clusters won't work. Or so I have been told. Not sure how the automatic cluster into a manual car would work out though.

I would love some parts from your 1999 ES parts car as well.

ok guys got the cluster, tach works, got the seats, however where can i go / how can i get my mileage re flashed

I'm pretty sure that's illegal... then anyone could get their mileage "retooled".

there are places that will do it - speedo shops and such, but it might cost a bit. i think they will only do it if you are the original owner, and you have the original cluster, too.

how far off are the two?

i want to put different gauges in my 00 lx and was wondering if the plastic cover over the gauges would have to be cut?? Would I have to take out the whole dash or what??

I don't know about the 99-00 models but with the 01-03 models you could actually remove the gauges themselves from the cluster and swap them. That's what I did when I switched out my stock cluster for an MSP one. I guess technically it's still my stock cluster but now it has the MSP speed, tach, fuel and water temp gauges. It really isn't that hard at all - like two screws for each part. Just have to be a little careful...

has anyone done changed gauges on the 00 lx? mine has a clear plastic case over the gauges so i was wondering how i would get that out?

dude, the whole assembly comes out of the dash... then, click on that link i just posted

ooo so the clear plastic cover is attached to the gauge cluster itself and not the dash, thanks for that link but now how would i go about actually getting the cluster out of the dash? sorry if my question wasnt clear before?

Reviving an old thread; related question though...

I have an 02 protege, manual, w/o tach. How would swapping this cluster go? Would the plugs match up? Would I have to run a tach wire myself or what? Details would be great

I'm not too concerned with the mileage not matching, but if it comes to that I'll check prices on having a speedo shop swap them and fixing the odometer.

It will more than likely work just fine for you. Have you ever take your cluster out before? If not, It's not too involved. Just take the 2 screws at the top of the gauge surround out (they attach the top of the gauge surround to the dash)... it works well when you put your steering wheel at its lowest position.
Next, grab the lower section of the surround and pull straight back out from the dash. This exposes the cluster and the 3 screws that hold it in. Make sure that you don't drop a screw here... they can get stuck in various places in the steering column. Now you can tilt the top of your cluster forward. On top there are 3 plugs. The middle plug (off center to the left) houses the tach wire (if it's there) It is back and purple. If you just look at the plug as it sits in the cluster the wire is on the far left in rear position. If the wire is there, then you are good to go. As you have an 02 (DX or LX?), I think the wire comes stock. Also, I'm not sure, but I think you need to get a cluster that has the same door lock options (power vs. manual) as what you have in your car. I hope this helps. I've taken plenty of gauges in an out of my 99DX.... so ask me if you need anything. If you need parts for a cluster, I've plenty.
