i have a 08.5 speed 3 and my rpm gauge was stuck so i tapped the face with a screw driver, well... the needle cam unstuck but i cracked the plastic face over the gauge in the process. so i ned to get a new cluster but i was wondering when i swap it out, does the milage stay with the cluster? or when i put the new one in will it automatically set to the previous milage on my cluster before?

If you buy a new cluster, I'm pretty sure it will say whatever the new cluster said. But I'm not sure. Sorry, I couldn't be of any real help. Probably shouldn't have even replied.

If you replace the cluster then your car won't start until a dealer programs the new cluster for you. When they do that they should be able to program the mileage to match. If not they'll put a sticker on the door jamb noting the mileage difference.

Now that said if the only thing that's broken is the clear plastic then don't worry about replacing the cluster itself. Just buy any cheap cluster (from any '04-'09 Mz3/MS3), remove your cluster and swap the clear plastic from the "new" one into yours. Then just stick it back in the car and you're good to go, no programming and no dealer visit.

EDIT:

Just looked up some pics. Once you remove the cluster there are six screws holding the back of the cluster on. Remove those and then pull the black front cover off by depressing all the tabs around the edge. Then two tabs hold the clear cover on.
