cleaning headlights

I actually used the Turtle wax version of headlight cleaner. It came with a couple of different sanding pads (hand sanding...ugh.), a spray bottle of some type of "lubricant", a tack cloth, and a sealed cloth that had some "treatment" on it. worked pretty well.

I used this as well, but I'm not really satisfied with the results. I think the hand sanding is less effective. I plan on trying the 3m kit now, so if you're in the market, just spend the extra $10 and save yourself the hassle.

(Sorry for reviving this thread...)
Sylvania/OSRAM makes a headlight restoration kit that includes a UV-protective coating. It is similar to 3M's kit, but the sanding is done by hand (no hand drill attachments.) Sylvania claims the UV coating is a permanent coating (which I take to mean it will stick around for a couple of years, fingers crossed.)

So I decided to use both the 3M and the Sylvania kits last weekend - used the 3M to restore the headlights, then applied the Sylvania UV coating to the headlights. Yep, this makes things a bit more costly (you have to buy two separate kits.) But the end results were truly spectacular - the headlights look like new, and the final UV coating seems to add a bit of clarity and smoothness to the end result.

I'll have to wait a year to see how the UV coating holds up, but I'm happy with the whole thing so far.

Something else to consider - I hope this helps...

1000 grit wet sand and clear coat followed by wax will work good
