Carbon Fiber SRI/CAI anyone?

I imagine as soon as finals are over and I get back from my 3 week summer vacation, which would be the beginning of June. I would like to have the first one done right around the end of june/beginning or july.

My biggest thing will be finding a sedan/P5 in the South Bend, IN area I think. This may sound silly, but do the 4 door and the 5 door protege's share the same engine bay design? If so, then it probably won't be difficult.

For the most part I believe, yes. It's not a silly question!

It should be easier for you to design, since I could tell from your pics you have the SRI going below some pipes/tubes/etc to get to the turbo.

so can we get any word from the testers or anything on how both (the SRI and CAI) are workin' and their opinions on each. which would u say is better, the SRI or CAI....im in austin TX....thinkin' it's about time for an intake.

I figured I would take pics when I have the next batch of intakes completed (over the weekend). I am making a couple of different colors, so it will show a nice assortment of products.

1moreMPH: its a tough call. My car feels faster with the SRI, but I hit fuel cut at warmer temps with the CAI (which would indicate colder air). I will have to get some track times or dyno times in the near future to compare the two.

One of the testers was supposed to dyno, but it turned out that he had a P5- it was a misunderstanding by both of us, so he never got it installed.

yea i hate fuel cut...so i may just go for the SRI...i just thought in the TX heat, a CAI would be better. jw.

I have a custom CAI but after a typical Ottawa winter I am planning to go to the SRI. Although the CAI brings in cooler air, it sounds as though the car is sucking air through a long straw when the turbo is spooling up. I am certain that this contributes a bit to turbo lag. Even in summer I think that the SRI is the way to go....here at least. The trade-offs with heat will probably be balanced by quicker spool time, less fuel cut, and better bottom-end power.

Looking forward to the pics on the weekend Riles.

Is everything still on schedule to ship out the intakes after the weekend Riles? I'm so ready to drop in the SRI into my car!

SRI sounds the same way to me. I had my AEM setup as SRI and switched to CAI just recently.

^^^Notice any difference performance or response wise?

Everything is on schedule- I got all the supplies today! I have everything but the filters, but I just need to tuck those in the boxes when monday rolls around (which is when they will arrive) and ship out the intakes.

There are two drying right now, and in about 3 hours, another will be drying. It takes a few coats, so the final coat won't be ready on any of them until late saturday/early sunday.

About the SRI vs. the CAI- I had my CAI on, then I tried running the CAI as an SRI (I put the filter on the maf, instead of the pipe into the fenderwell), and the performance was very similar- just like the AEM as an SRI. But, when I made a true SRI, I noticed more of a difference. I was surprised- I expected it to be similar, but it really does seem faster.

If all goes as planned and the weather holds out, I would like to get some track times next Friday to compare.

Here are some new pics of the SRI. Had to do a little photoshopping to get my hands out of the pics.

In response to your concern, Slug420- my original designs did have stalling issues, but with each subsequent test I built, I moved the nipple closer and closer to the turbo. Now, the outlet for the BPV is only a few inches from the turbo, and it works great. When I let off the throttle after a real hard drive and heavy blow off, the rpms will dip to 500-600, but then go back up to 800 pretty quickly. I haven't stalled at all with the current setup the way its being sold now.

A major difference between my SRI and the Perrin is that the BPV nipple on mine is almost at the bottom, unlike theirs, and I think that really helps.
