car comparo: GTI, RSX Type-S, Mazdaspeed

That 337 looks pretty cool...is the 1.8T the only engine option for it?

for the 337, yes, the only engine it comes with ie the 1.8T.. there's a lot of extra stuff on this edition, to name what i can:
dif exhaust
6 speed
18" bbs wheels
interior trim accents
recaro seats
body kit
perf tires
huuuge brakes (13"? in front dunno about rear) and better calipers
alum pedals
lowered suspension

for the regular gti you can get the vr6 engine and the 6 speed, and all other things like moonroof, premium snd (it's in the us version not canadian), and other things i'm not sure of..

i'd probably go for the 337 even though it doesn't come with the vr6 because its seems more unique and has those other cool options...

yeah, i agree.. and i suppose i can live with the lack of a great suspension.. i test drove one today actually.. felt really good

i haven't seen any 337's around here yet, maybe when the dealer gets one, i'll go test drive it just for fun...i test drove a gti awhile back and it was pretty cool...

337 IS TIGHT, but VW has poor QC.

I almost bought one, but could not bring my self to suffer at VWs hands any longer. My 1.8t Jetta was such a headache! Good engine, very poor quality control on the rest of the vehicle. The last good Vdub I owned was a 92 Corrado SLC VR6.
Take it from experience, every one I know who owns a VW has tons of BS problems after the first year. Ironically enough, they hold their value quite well. I think the WRX is a good choice if you have totally discarded the Speed. There is one element that seriously attracts me to cars like the Speed, I love to be the underdog! The element of surprise is a beautiful thing.

yea man I love the 337...but it was out of my price range...the interior is SWEET, recaro seats will hug you and hug you more :)

You sure you want a new car though...you could probally find a nice used 1994 240SX and do an S15 conversion and have a drift monster for that price...but the RWD would make it rough to drive in winter :(

When you get the 337, besure to post up pics! I sat in one the other day, the interior is just amazing, and I love the tranny, it shifts pretty smooth!

You can get a brilliant deal on a 337, if you can find one still sitting on a dealers lot.

That's what I did.

Brand new 337. Asking was $34,900.00.

After negotiations and grad rebate I got it for just $31,500.00.

I love the car, the interior is brilliant, engine is genius.

There are the niggling issues that may pop up (the coil packs and the window regulators) but these are so well known they are just an easy fix.

The only hang up so far is the rims. Check out VW Vortex's forums, long long long post on the rims pitting and corroding. Keeping my fingers crossed it does not happen to mine.

Long time ago (Last August) I had put a deposit down on the MSP. Due to the delays I gave up.

So happy I did.

Cheers!

You gotta hook up some winnipeg love...I only saw one 337...and that was at the dealership showroom...and I was blown away by like the interior.

Definitely a sweet ride, the 337. I had a '00 GTI 1.8T - this was after a '95 GTI VR6, and both of them I modified quite a bit. I'll always love VW's, but I don't regret getting the MSP in the least!

The 1.8T was totaled (not my fault), so it was time for a change (after owning 5 different Dubs, both new and used)...

One thing about the MSP - it feels nice and solid, like a German car...

I told myself I'd never own anything but German cars - but hey, people can change - and other great cars can be built...case in point, the MSP! :D

I think I can help here. I just traded in my 2001 GTI 1.8T for my MSP. And my sister has a 2002 RSX -S, so I'm familiar with all 3 cars.

I loved my GTI, it was small, but had lots of room inside for people and stuff if I needed it. The suspension was soft (and the 2001 came with 15" wheels YUCK) So the wheels and suspension were what I changed first. Put some nice 17's on, some H&R Sport Springs, Bilstein Sport Shocks, and larger rear sway bar, car handled pretty close to my MSP, and wasn't too uncomfortable. The 1.8T is what I was most sad to see go. It's awesome, nothing else I can say. The 2.8L VR6 is another beautiful engine. But it's main drawback is weight. It's not light, and makes the GTI VR6 very nose heavy. That reason, and cost, were probably why it's not in the 337. The 337 is nice, but the only thing on it that you can't do aftermarket is the 6 speed. I still autocross with the Chicago Volkswagen Organization, and the 337's tear it up every time, at least until I learn how to drive...I got rid of my GTI because of reliability problems. After window regulator and coil-pack failures I decided it was time to go back to my rice-burner roots.

As for the RSX, I have never driven a sweeter stick-shift. The car fits you more like a glove, everything is for the driver. It's not a sedan, it's not a wagon, it's small little car for you. I'm not a big fan of 4 cylinders (unless they are turbo'd) because of their lack of low-end power, but the RSX does OK. It really makes you grin as you approach 8000 RPM however!!! The suspension is definitely better than the GTI in stock form, but not as tight as the MSP. The interior of the RSX is very nice, easy to use and easy to read. The MSP is nice, but can't compare with the interior. The VW has a nice interior also, but the RSX is still nicer.

I really like the MSP, it's been 4 months now, and here are my 2 complaints. The engine isn't nearly as refined as the RSX or 1.8T. It's noisy, rough, and does suffer from the occasional bout of hiccups that have been mentioned around here. The front seats suck for autocrossing. They look cool, but don't hold you in place very well. Okay, one more complaint, I really wish Mazda hadn't cheaped out on the extras. I travel a lot and cruise control would be nice, I can't see that being such a high cost item that they had to cut it. I miss my old GTI's sunroof as well... So far I love solid build of the car, and cannot get over it's handling. Oh yeah, one last thing, it's ORANGE!!!!

Mike: put racing belts in for autox. I have a set in, just the 3 in wide lap belts and the sub straps anchored to the seat bolts. Works great. I can take both feet off the floor to work the pedals and my butt stays planted.

You'll need a couple of right angle tabs for the front rings to mount to. And the right side belt needed about a four inch metal extension to clear the seat track hardware. The left side just bolted in under the standard belt anchor. Easy to do, works great.

Later.

again, thanks again for all the input...
it's either the 337.. or i'll bite the bullet and get a 20th ae.. although i doubt i'll be get a deal on it, if any.. hehe
only significant drawback i can see on the 20th ae version is the inferior wheels to the 337, and relative top heaviness due to the sunroof.. lol

i definitely see this as a car that i can grow into :)
oh, another thing that makes this a deal breaker against the msp is simply AVAILABILITY! lol...:D

My brother has a GTi VR6 and with both cars stock, they have almost identical numbers. Suspension wise I blow him away, but he has a V6 that can be HELLA TUNED.. so if you're a tuner.. go with the GTi but if you want a car thats fun as hell and I have had ZERO problems with (knock on wood) go with the MSP. I drove an RSXs and liked it alot, but it was to small for me I think was the bottom line.. anyway goodluck

heh, i just put down a deposit on a jazz blue 20th ae GTI =)
i managed to get somewhat of a deal actually.

saved on doc fee, saved on blockheater/pdi (not the freight obviously), will get cost +10% on the winter steels/covers/tires i'll have to buy, permanent 10% discount on parts/accessories, free window tint (3 windows: rear, side-rears), and free rockguard on the hood

there's only going to be 185 in canada.. O_O and even fewer blue :D

i dunno.. i test drove the wrx today.. it didn't feel really that good.. :/... i mean with the tire and maybe wheel upgrade i'd have to do to make the tires less "spongy" would put the wrx over the top for me in terms of price i realized.... and there is absolutely zero torque down low in the rpms... lol the turbo starts spooling up around 3000rpms.. and really kicks in 4000 plus or so.. :/ the interior.. wasn't that appealing either.. and the shifter was incredibly notchy

gti/337/20thae gets max torque just below 2000rpms and the 6speed in the 337 (same as in the 20th ae) felt great.. just all around i felt incredibly good with the car.. heh
