capture an ip address?

does anyone know how to capture an ip address from a aol instant message? i have someone playin lil games and basically running off at the mouth about my girl.. i think i know who it is (for those that remember my i hate my ******* roommate thread about 8 months ago)
i just want to verify its him before i do anything.

if you do direct connect, just do.... "netstat 10" in a msdos prompt. no need for sniffing.

you can netstat him on just messaging. then say you want to send him a picture of something, and download a joiner, and then attach a file from anything you know how to use, if you are a newbie, you could get Sub7 or bogui ver5.2 and attach the SBserv.exe with a pic, and use the joiner, and his virus or firewall will unlikely catch it becuase he thinks it a picture, then when he clicks to open it then you automatically have him. If you have is IP and if you get the server.exe or SBSERV.exe on his HD then you are good to go. there are some Good joiners from ASTALAVISTA.com

When he downloads and and see the pic, it will say its like a jpeg or a gif file or whatever format the picture is in.

Think to yourself, how many people have IMed you that are not on your buddy list? Out of those people how many would you actually want to receive IMs from? For me the answer is 0.

Solution:
Click on My AIM -> Edit Options... -> Edit Preferences
Select Privacy from the left hand side.
Choose "Allow only users on my buddy list" underneath "Who can contact me".

Its as simple as that. Users not on your list won't even be able to read your away message, they won't know you're online, and even if they did know, who cares they're not going to bother you.

If this really bugs your stalker, he will seek other ways to harrass you...which are punishable by law. AIM is locked up tight as far as legal issues are concerned. aka, you can't have a restraining order put out on someone because you sniffed a packet coming from their computer.

setup a another AIM account, and make beleive your a girl or some s***, and IM him, and maybe change your IP, or you might get lucky and he wont netstat you, and then tell him you have a picture of yourself and you want one of him, then when your doing that send the pic with the joiner. The only program that i know of that blocks joiners and tracks them is BlackICE, and i highly doubt he has that. Just persuade him and make your story believable and maybe he will give in.

well, like I said, if you block the IMs he will seek alternate ways to harrass you, which will actually break a law. Phone records are a start...record the messages on your answering machine.

However, if you go and kick his ass and he goes to the police, it doesn't matter that you have collected a bunch of evidence...to them you're the one breaking the law by assaulting him.

isnt AOL using dynamic ip ? (unless AOL now has cable .. ?) If yes, knowing what his ip was then and verifying it with the one you get now if you do get it might not tell you anything because his ip will have most likely changed.

And i don't believe in IT Techs using AOL ... lol

but I think the best way for you (and easiest) would be using Ethereal to look at the packets you received and try to find out which ones are related to AIM

heres an idea.

get access to a server on which you have access to (or have a friend look up) the httpd logs. then put up some lame image or page that he/she will more than likely click on and visit. the httpd software will log the ip and there ya go.

if needed, start a new aim account and build up yourself as another person so he'll be more likely to go to the site.

Don't be so sure, I'm in IT. I've had the same aol account for years. It's cheap, highly portable nearly regardless of platform - and very reliable. I can even call and have my emails read to me over the phone.

Get his IP and DOS him, if you don't know how - start reading.
