I just over heard in my office, which is monitoring the progress of the uprighting, that it is moored up at Dutch Harbor until it is completely upright then they will tow it to Seattle, Wa. We had some Lawyers come in with the owners of the Cougar Ace yesterday and they had a tow plan for the vessel to be brought to Seattle, Wa.
The latest incident report indicated that all decks had damaged cars, that a large amount of transmission fluid and other fluids had leaked from the cars, and that all cars would need to be re-secured.
That does not sound like good news to me. I know break fluid can mess-up paint and I think trans fluid can, too. Without knowing exactly what parts of what cars were effected by misc engine fluids, I don't think Mazda could sell these cars as new.

I have heard reports from hear and other palces that the straps that hold the cars have held. There are appearently between 4 and 6 teathers for each car, which can probably hold that car if the ship was upside down.
Of course, since they do not describe the type of damage it is hard to tell what caused it.
I just keep thinking that it should've happened near some S. Pacific island or Hawaii. Just roll down the windows and push 'em overboard. Mz3/CX7 reef... now that would be an amazing dive! Too bad it would never happen anyways because as mentioned, all the nasty fluids that would first have to be drained.

Yes, leak through the dipstick. Even at a very slow rate (1 drop a minute) it would take relatively littel time for there to be quite a mess. Plus aren't there vent holes and other openings that we don't normally think about because we don't drive rotated 70 degrees to one side.
ANyway, without being able to certify that a car is *undamaged* not just damaged, but repairable, Mazda will probably not sell these as new. There is just too much liability...

I am a naval architect and I work on NAVY ships. Don't worry about tipping over, or sinking. Just keep away from people trying to drive a small boat full of C4 to ya!
Seriously NAVY ships are tough, just google USS radford collision, or USS cole, or USS stark. The damage that any one of these ships took would've put the Cougar Ace in the briney deep in less time than it takes to push the GMDSS button.
BTW the cougar ace was turned over to it's owners recently with a slight list to contain a small amount of water.
