Shipwrecked Mazdas won't be sold as new
Maybe this means we can get em for cheaper!! (first)
DETROIT - Mazda Motor Co. says it won't sell as new any of its 4,700 cars on board a ship that severely listed south of Alaska's Aleutian Islands in July.
The Cougar Ace was transferring ballast in the Pacific Ocean on July 23 when it listed 60 degrees onto its port side, probably damaging some of the cars it was hauling from Japan, said Mazda spokesman Jay Amestoy
It took more than a month to right the ship. It keeled over so far that its propeller was out of the water.
Amestoy said said all cars would be sold as used with full new-car warranties. Their history will be disclosed to potential buyers.
On board the ship were 1,500 hot-selling Mazda3 cars, and at least 4,700 Mazda Motor Corp. vehicles in total - which were estimated to be worth $117.5 million.
At the time, Mazda Canada spokesperson Greg Young said that Mazda Canada would replenish orders for the autos as additional ships come in.
Reports also said that the cars are insured during transit to the U.S. and Canada, but specific details were witheld.
Mazda sold about 50,000 Mazda3 cars last year in Canada.
