Can i use any protege transmission for my MS Protege?

Hey, im a newb on mazdaforums. Well, my MS Protege's tranny wont go into reverse or 5th gear anymore and the tranny is leaking, so i'm assuming that it's bust and the tranny cracked. I wanna swap it out but can't find any MSP trannys for a decent price. I did some research and it said that all 2.0L proteges use the same transmission, even the Mazdaspeed Protege. The transmission is the G15M-R and it said that i can basically just use any 2.0L protege tranny to replace my MSP tranny. I'm wondering if that is true and if i will need to do anything to make it compatible with my MSP other than the LSD?? Please let me know if anyone has any experience with this situation. Thanks.

any 5spd from 01-03 protege 2.0L will work. though you wont have a lsd for the cheaper price.

well i can just use the lsd from my old tranny so it wouldn't matter. But is there anything else that would need to be transfered over to the regular tranny??

how would the lsd make it not go into reverse and 5th gear and make a leak on the tranny??

sometimes when they go...they go. where exactly is the leak coming from? when you put it in first through 4th what does the car do?

well it just happened recently this past weekend. i was driving on the highway and then all of sudden, 5th gear kept popping out. And then when i got home, i couldn't get it into reverse or 5th gear anymore. I did a tranny flush after that happened and it started leaking somewhere above where the axles are inserted. Even with the car off, i can only go from 1st to 4th gear.

well i found a 03 protege dx transmission for bout $700. would it matter if its from a ES, LX, or DX?? or are they all the same??

the MSP is a little different internally, stronger shift forks and syncros but the gears and the way they bolt up are exactly the same

While you're swapping the LSD over, don't forget to have the LSD welded so you don't have to worry about it popping in the future.

Though, considering that only 5th and reverse are affected, you might want to consider opening up your current transmission and only swapping over what you need from a donor trans. Sounds like it could just be a bent/broken shift fork or something. The leak could be as simple as the neutral or reverse sensor being loose or something like that. Since you're going to be opening up the transmission to remove the LSD anyways, you may as well start by just opening the end cap where reverse/5th are and checking out that area first.

I have the same problem blumsp have but i dont have a ms protege mine is just a 00 protege ES and the tranny is about to go after a long time looking for another tranny i finally found one but it is from a 01 protege with a 2.0l engine i was just wondering is this tranny could fit and work ok in my 00 protege?

Thank you
