Hi everyone,
I recently purchased a 2021 Mazda CX-5 and I've been reading about common issues with the CCV (crankcase ventilation valve). Apparently, the CCV can go bad and needs replacing sometimes, which can be a hassle.
I noticed that the thermostat housing on the 2024 CX-5 looks very similar to the CCV on my 2021 model. The engines are also identical (2.5 NA), which makes me wonder if the 2024 thermostat could be a possible replacement for the CCV on earlier models.
Here's what I'm thinking:
However, I also have some concerns that the ECU might throw a check engine light if it can't communicate with the CCV (which wouldn't be there anymore). This might be solvable, but I'm not sure.
I'm hoping someone with a 2024 CX-5 or a mechanic might be able to shed some light on this and / or send a picture of what their thermostat housing looks like underneath the battery tray and PCM. It would be fantastic if the thermostat truly is a replacement option for the CCV.
In the meantime, I've attached a video that shows the inside of a CCV for reference: https://youtu.be/5q_NTWg-uSI?si=GNHHPFNkuwEabx4q
Thanks!

Here's what I'm thinking:
- The 2024 thermostat seems like a direct replacement based on appearance and the fact that the engines are the same.
- The CCV's coolant temperature sensor might not be needed with the thermostat (assuming it's fully mechanical).
- The thermostat might have a spot for the sensor, making it a true plug-and-play option for replacing the CCV.
However, I also have some concerns that the ECU might throw a check engine light if it can't communicate with the CCV (which wouldn't be there anymore). This might be solvable, but I'm not sure.
