Cam Gears?

Sweet! So what's the whole science of cams? How are you going to adjust them? Can you install them yourself?

Mark at Tripoint told me to retard the intake about 3 degrees and advance the exhaust about 4 degree adn I shoudl see very good top end gains. But I am going to dyno tune them I believe so I will let you all know the results. I sent off the Money Order for them today and it will get there early next week so I should have them the next week.

Dyno Tuning!

chdesin,
You are wise. Every Engine is different and the only true power gains will come from the dyno testing. I do not doubt what Mark says, but again use his words as a test point in the dyno.

I'll bet you reach the acclaimed 12 Horsepower claim from the J-spec intake cam and the mazdaspeed exhaust cam. The same thing happend to the Integra owners...They started dropping in the type-r camshafts and their cars lost power in some cases....but what happend when they started tuning them with the cam gears.....True Power Gains. I'm just dying to see what your final results are.....It will be a nice response to the people that branded the cams for our cars "Useless"

Thank God we have Tripoint Enginnering on our side!

NO doubt CharlieP5 I am excited to see what they will do too. It may be a month or so before I can get on teh dyno though since I am rebuilding my motor and I need to break it in before I take it above 4 grand. I'm thinking about putting a Greddy E-Manage system in my car so that I can tune it even more and advannce the timing and my injector pulse. I amy be able to see more than the 12 hp gain from the cams as Mark says they picked up about 7 hp from teh FS-ZE stock with them so if I can get them tuned right along with the cams "theorectically" I coudl see a 19 hp gain with the cams but I doubt it I'm shooting for 15 overall with cams and gears. Then about another 20-25 with the pistons and correct tuning that would bring me up to about 160 crank hp but I may be able to pull about 170-180 crank HP with the dyno tuning and the E-manage in such case I would have one hell of a NA Protege.

Yes you would! I'm pretty sure if you get an aftermarket Racing header like the one AWR has on his site and a Cat Back Exhaust System you will get there with no problem. The E-manage system will definately give you tuning supremacy over the engine. (Plus you can eliminate the f*in Flow meter) I see alot of dyno time coming up for you since all of those components need carefull tuning and patience. (redp5)

Are you sure you didn't get things mixed up. Retarding the intake and advancing the exhaust is just the opposite of what you need to do to gain high end power. You almost always advance the intake and retard the exhaust. This helps "breathing" at high rpms, by allowing the motor to inject air a little early, and expelling exhaust a little late, effectively lengthing the power stroke which is tiny fractions of a second as is, at high rpms. You might want to double check. I would hate for you to have to waste a bunch of time on the dyno fiddle-farting around with retarded intake and advance exhaust.

Enjoy,

doesn't retarding the intake, and advancing the exhaust increase overlap? isn't more overlap what gives you more high rpm power?

correct me if i am wrong...

HEY LISTEN TO THIS

so i went to the shore this weekend and got stuck in JERSEY'S FINEST TRAFFIC on the GARDEN STATE PKWY....i see an MP# wit tints, altezza's and exhaust...thought nothing of it he came up on me and started to rev.....and man he reved sounded like almost 8 k....seriously...we did some pulls in traffic and i hear a special little somthin in his car when he hit high RPM's...CAMS...he had cams, low comp pistons, headers cat back of course...then he went on he said he had lifters, retaining springs....and he was pushin 200!!.....i was "OK"...:bs: ....so we did a couple of pulls an u could hear the cams but s*** he wasn't really pullin on me that hard from first to second...we never got a chance to really race...i out cornered him on a turn though he couldnt hang ...i am a lil crayz wit my MP3....so i was a car show last night and was talkin wit a gu in a SPEC-V and he raced that same MP3 on the hwy and he pulle dlike a b**** on him....sam s*** 1 and 2nd they were close then he pulled hard....i was like hmmm.....can N/A be a good option???....i told him bout MP3.com he said he would check it out...but

nice story, but what does that have to do with cam gears?

they goive more than 6 hp number than everyone else is gettin....so somthin ha to be goin wrong......and i am sorry i posted in the wrong section too....

Overlap is when the intake valve and the exhaust valve are open at the same time. Increaseing overlap reduces power, because it shortens the power stroke. Now when you buy high performance N/A cams you will end up with more overlap, but not because intake and exhaust timing, but rather the overall increased duration of the valves being open. Effectively give the motor more time to "breath" at high rpms when there is not enough time for the motor to inject a cylinder full of air. Hince why volumetric effeciency stinks in most cars around redline, with the exception of the VTEC Honda powerplants and other similarly equipped cars.

I was seriously thinking about cams before my turbo, and now that I hear there are camgears out there I'm pretty much set that I'm gonna do it. Just have to save a little bit more money and I can order them. Anyway I don't know anyone with a dyno good enough to be spending the day on there adjusting cam gears, so I'm not sure what to do. I'm aware I won't see 10+ HP until i tune it with cam gears so I wonder if it is worth spending all that time and money and just not get a turbo? If I only knew someone with a dyno...

OK everyone I received teh cam gears today. THey look very good I will get pics up as soon as I can. The are a black anodized ring with a blue anodized center and a 6 bolt retaining system so they won't slip on you. The timing marks are etched on the gears and the alignment marks are there as well. The only thing I didn't like was that there was nothing on them to indicate whether each timing mark was equal to 1 or 2 degrees each. I have e-mailed mark and he shoudl get back to me soon on this issue. The slide right on my JDM cams with no probs and the cam journals line up perfectly. The cam sensor marks are in the correct positions and I shoudl be good to go with the rebuild once i get 300 more bucks for rings and rod bearings. Once that happens though it will be a month before I do a dyno pull I want to break it in right.

UPDATE

Ok everyone here are the pics I promised you.

I seriously seriously seriously doubt he was pushing 200 hp. especially with LOW compresion pistons unless he had turbo. Alot of people talk alot of crap and unless he has a load of cash I don't know where he would have gotten springs except for the FS-ZE springs.....custom header and all that but oh well whatever.

Those honestly look a lot nicer than I thought they were going to look. Kind of remind me of Unorthodox Cam Gears. Hope you get eh opportunity to tune with them soon and post the gains.

Hmm..maybe those "cams" you heard was actually a turbo spooling? Unless you get pretty close, I doubt you could hear anything else on the highway...you didn't pull over and have him pop the hood did you?
