Calling all MS3 Owners with smoking Turbos...

If its white thick smoke then its not normal!!!! (no)
If its a black puff, then yes, its normal...

White thick smoke is an indication of oil burning...not good. Get it checked out and replace that turbo!!

Mine is a "B" version. I wonder what that means? Did they fix the fixed turbo?

any time a part number from Mazda suffixes with a letter such as A or B it usually means a revision has occurred
 
My car also smokes and i have the corksport tbe.It been smoking for like a year already.Only after driving it hard.I get loud pops also inbetween shifts.and wheni ge ton it i get a little puff of smoke.So i think my seals are shot.Its embarassing to smoke in traffic lol...
 
Mine is bone stock and smokes on hard RH turns!

Mine is an 07' Speed 3

mfr early 07 (I will post the exact date later)

currently has just over 8,000 on it.

No mods whatsoever except the solid shifter bushings.

It only smokes when taking a hard right hand corner, usually at about 3,000 plus rpm in third gear. It has done it only twice, but when it did - holy s*** batman! The first time it did it I thought it was the hoopdee mobile 89' Olds 98 behind me that was smoking like crazy! But after reading some of these posts I had the sneaking suspicion that my beloved little wagon was responsible for making the plume of blu/gray smoke:(

WEll, it did it again yesterday while taking on on ramp in third. This time there was nobody behind me so there can be no doubt that it was my car smoking. I was pushing it a little - but not real hard - I had my two sons, ages 9 & 11 with me. When this thing started smoking it just let out a HUGE cloud of smoke.

I guess it's off to the dealership and see what they have to say?

Umm just to clarify......
White smoke is WATER....
Blue smoke is OIL.......
Black smoke is fuel......
Orange residue on exhaust is most likely octane boosters

Most people won't even see the blue... Generally, people will describe oil burning as thick white smoke. Only an automotive connoisseur, will describe it as bluish smoke.

Just throwing in my two cents, I've noticed a lot of comments about more smoking at idle than under load.. How did everyone rule out excess oil getting past the piston rings? Burn that in the engine, and out the exhaust with no cat to clean it up, and you have bluish white smoke. Maybe the rings aren't sealing well at idle.

Lemme know.
 
People are fitting catch cans and the problem disapears. 5 mins after installing my cp-e dump/cat the car started smoking while waiting at traffic lights. When driving this is gone.

I had a 80's mazda familia and it used to blow turbos all the time, you damn well knew it when the turbo went. Smoke absolutely everywhere and it didnt decide to stop smoking when I decided to drive. It smoked at idle/driving , everywhere. It certainly wasnt on and off like this prob.

Cant believe a dump causes turbo death instantly. I think blow back throught the intake man is the answer.
 
Got a new turbo. 31K miles. Smoked right in front of the service manager with stock DP w/ gutted 2nd cat. No questions asked, just symptom questions. Rulled out PCV first.
 
Well.... Mine is smoking again... and I've already had my turbo replaced under warranty by Mazda... looks like the new part number still has the same flaw...
 
had a tbe for 8k still no cel and no smoking.

but after gettin the tbe, i hear a loud pop coming out from my exhaust when i go to 6k at 1st gear shifting into 2nd gear. is this normal. My car sound like a rally car when it does that. I wonder if a small flame comes out too. it's pullin hard when it does that. I can do this on command too. It happens from a stop or from a roll, just between 1st and 2nd shift.

You're shifting from first to second at 6K?
 
maybe this was answered already but, to the owners with turbo problems, are u switching to synthetic oil after the first oil change? i was really surprised when the dealer told me they used non synthetic for their oil changes. the oil pressure there might be whats causing the seals to go bad.

I finally purchased an oil catch can w/ a breather off eBay for $65

I have been wanting to get a downpipe and race/test pipe but haven't because of all the problems I have read about the mazdaspeed3 owners have had with their cars smoking after doing the upgrade.

A lot of people are thinking it's the turbo seals going bad but after much research I finally came across a post that made since.

"from what i've read, reduced back pressure causes a reduction in the resistance in the PCV allowing oil to flow easier into intake manifold. since the PCV IS only open at idle and light cruising this is why you see smoke at this point because its getting burned up.
Ultimately an oil catch can will probably fix this as well as cleaning out the intake manifold."

I also read it is best to get an oil catch can w/ a breather so the bad fumes get released too and are not making their way back into the intake also.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Any thoughts?

How would you explain all the people that have TBE and no smoke that don't have the catch cans...???
